Does it pass the smell test? Bad powder sometimes has an ammonia smell to it.

received my Federal 209A primers I ordered. Took the sml out today and the third shot went poof. This was with cleaned barrel breach etc to start off with. I stopped at my shop on th away home and this powder does have a hunt of ammonia smell to it. Next step is to get another lb of H4198 and try again. Also will be duplexing it with N110 soon

Try 34gr of the N110 by itself. You might be surprised its nearly as fast as 55gr of 4198. I never had N110 go poof.

Thank you thank you thank you!
I bought N110 this morning and had to try duplex to see what would happen with my H4198. Third shot went poof. Barrel was gummy where ignition took place. Cleaned the barrel. So I loaded 34gn of straight N110 and shot 6 in a row. Cracks like a rifle! Went back later this evening and shot perfect 2” high at 100 yards. Need to shoot at 200&300 yards to see how it does further in the field. This H4198 definitely has a hint of ammonia to it and it’s gonna get dumped.
Thank you again and to everyone else who has chimed in.

Np you might be able to use a little more but around 35gr is when N110 starts getting rough on sabots in a 45cal. Sometimes it just needs a wad or a wad and knurl the bullets. Under 35gr is usually ok but its close. Pressure is fine is just rises to peak fast.

Really hoping to get a MGM 45/70 converted before next season. But this Bergara is gonna be fine. I will play with it more over the summer and if it shoots good from 2-300 yards then I might just keep on shooting it.

Thank you for the info. Shot this setup and dialed it close at 200. Then shot it dead center and 100 and it shot 4” high from being so close for 200. I get another day this week I will adjust to be dead on at 100 and use the Burris drop tines mildot scope for the 2-300 yards desired. Didn’t get to crony as the breeze kept reading on it. Disregard all the other holes in the target. My son had fun shooting his rifles when I was in between shots

Its a good simple load and fairly cheap to shoot considering you dont need much powder to get there. As far as temp stability it will blow away 4198 every time. Super clean powder too. It should be really close to 2400fps.

Is the limiting factor in achieving 2600fps from this setup on me using the sabot? Say I used a wad and then the sabot should I be able to get it up to 2600fps. I ask cause I love flat shooters. Also how limited is the savage breach plug say compared to Luke Horaks ASG setups

A wad might help but i highly doubt you will get past 37gr no matter what.

N120 will hit 2600fps no problem at all. Its a screamer for 45cal sabot loads. Around 57gr-58gr is about what is needed. It can be temp sensitive when cold but it still goes bang. You just lose some speed vs hot weather. Ive shot a fair amount of it with a Savage plug. Works fine.

how much fps loss do you think when its really cold? say like around 10-20 degrees? I think that powder may be about perfect for me
