I was at the range today shooting my .45 Accura with BH209 and my 346grn Gould bullets. And as is my way, i forgot to put the bag of wool wads in my range bag. I had 6 in my hunting backpack and i used those while i tried to figure out an alternative. First i went thru the brass buckets til i found a couple of .50 shells and thought I'll punch some out of cardboard or sommething. Not that easy. Shells, as it turns out, aren't very sharp. Not sharp enough to cut thru a pieces of thin cardboard anyway. But while digging thru my bin of hunting gear that lives in the back seat of my car from Oct 1 thru Jan 1, i found a box of SST's and tan sabots. Also found my pocket knife with the changeable blades, razor sharp thankfully. I thought i can cut these petals off and makes some sub bases. I had heard of some one else trying it. I knew that MMP makes some. I wasn't going home just over missing wads and i would try shooting without wads if it came to that. So i pulled out 24 sabots and trimmed off all the petals and tried to shave them as flat as i could. I loaded up just like always and shot at 50 yards. They made a pretty good difference in my group. I went from 1.5" to under an inch. 2.5 inches high. I shot 6 and then moved to 100 yards. First i shot 3 of the 200grn SST''s in sabots and. They hit about 6-8" high and about a 3-4"-ish group. Then i switched back to the Goulds and bases and I was able to put 5 of the next 6 touching. First one out of a cool barrel always shoots low and right a lil. Im very happy with the results but now i have to either cut down a bunch of sabots or find someone already making them. I saw the ones that snap onto MMP sabots but for my bullets they gotta be flat. I have several hundred sabots leftover from bullets I've bought over the years so I can make a bunch. Has anyone else had luck doing this? Anyone know where to find these already made in .45?

Boy , 45 is the problem . I dont know why he only offers them for a 50 i do believe . I think you may be stuck filleting 45 sabots . What about veggie wads or poly wads ?? I use 45 wool wads myself .
Kinda uncool that the 50 gets most of the cool stuff aint it !!!! I dunno muzzy , wish i knew somethin to help you......

Got to love those 45cal Lyman Gould bullets. My one Grandson who has yet to harvest a deer Finally scored this past Saturday with those Gould bullets. It was a far shot about 100 yds through the woods. We were up in a tree stand and at the shot I could not see the reaction of the doe, but saw her run off. A minute later I heard her bawl. My grandson aimed for the middle of the doe. I assumed he meant behind the shoulder but a little higher. Turned out he aimed and shot at the middle of the doe and caught her by the last rib. Due to the angle from tree stand etc the shot came out the stomach. Anyway we trailed it about 125 yds or so and found her. She was a small doe but he was happy as this was his first deer and he hadn’t been able to pull the trigger on one in 3 years. We both thought she was bigger due to the distance and it started to get dark. Bottom line he’s happy, got the monkey off his back and now can enjoy some fine eating.
Will say the stomach area was like liquid mush!. What a mess !

Congratulate him for me. I have yet to put a Gould thru anything but targets. But i am very happy with the accuracy of it in my Accura and my Knight. I have been using the wool wads in both. I'm going to shoot both the Knights with them and the bases I made.

MMuzzy , You ever gave the Power Belts a try in the 45 ? I know nothing about them myself but I do like the simplicity of them in my Omega . But I have always kept it at a hundred yards or less except on a coyote the one time .

Yes i used to shoot them. They always shot fine. I think some guys try to push them too hard while hunting and that's, imo, why they frag. Too fast for a lead coni. They aren't jacketed, just kinda plated. Keeps bore from getting leaded and that's it, i believe. But then i started casting my own and there's something more to it when you can say "i made this". And these Goulds are really sweet. That said, check out these home made powerbelts. I cut down the sabots, shaved them smooth and flat, then with a tiny bit of NASA lube stuck them to the Goulds.

I can't wait to make a bunch up and get another range day with them. I wish I could buy the .45 powerbelt bases by themselves and just stick them on my bullets. So much easier. But them PBs are pricey.

The poly wads seal great. They are .463 OD. Those sabot bases are no where near that large. Those dark brown sabots look like the old MMP formula too. New ones are light tan.

Yeah, I got these with a gun i bought a couple months ago. Not gonna use them so i sacrificed them to the project. They fit the bore same as the light tan ones i used at the range. We'll see how they work. I have a bunch of light blue sabots too. Ill try all 3 types. I recovered a few of the tan ones and they looked like they performed perfectly.

Good on you trying that . Never did get around to casting other than a big ol pile of batteries stacked up in the pasture . Always figured someday ,LOL . I haven't reload a single bullet in couple years and one time loved to do it . Thanks for sharing .

GM-54 I am not trying to get off track here but would those poly wads work in a Sav MLII, a smokeless ML? I would like to try something different to wool or fiber.
