I’ve always shot 100 grains BH209. After hunting with a 45/70 and absolutely pummeling deer in the woods with a 405 grain Core Lokt going 1330 FPS, I’m starting to rethink my Blackhorn loads. Im going to be ordering either a Thumbhole V2 or a MR soon and might work up some 80-90 grain loads.

Anyone got field experience with sub 100 grain loads of BH209?

I shoot 90g BH209 with a Precision rifle QT 250g bullet, TC Triumph gun, it's been working for me, the farthest I've shot out to was 120 yards, all have been pass throughs, and the longest recovery was about 50 yards, the rest were 30 yards or less

I shoot 70gr by volume with a 460gr lead conicals. BUT I hunt THICK river bottoms and my longest shots maybe 60 - 70yds

Our hunting load has been 90 grain Blackhorn, 250 grain Deep Curl, W209 primer.
Is that what works best in the 45 ultra lite. 90 of 777 fff is best accuracy for mine.found a local guy selling bh now but he is out but expects delivery soon, going to give it a try in this gun now that I have a good primer crush

On December 20, 2019 I used 78 grains of BH209 by weight (111.4 grains by volume) pushing a 250 gr Barnes tipped TMZ at 80 yards from my TC Bone Collector.

Dumped him right in his tracks. 138 2/8” gross, 136 4/8” net - I’m not changing anything.

We use the load in the Omega X7, Omega Dream Season, and 50 caliber UltraLight. The load utilizes a sabot in these rifles.

The 250 deep curl is a land rider in the 45 UltraLight. It very well may be, 90 grain Blackhorn will not be enough powder to obturate.

Thank you

90 gr. BH209 (Volume) .452 300gr. XTP (non-mag) Harvester crushrib or smooth sabot, has taken three deer for me so far. All heart shots, they ran maybe 20 yds tops. Excellent blood trails, punched two holes. Ranges were 20, 60, 80 est. yds.
Using Optima V2. Wish I had taken pics of the doe heart from last saturday, it was blownup in two halves!

I worked with 80 grains volume for a youth hunt, 50 cal, 250 gn bullet. My son used it, the deer went about 30 yards after the 25 yard shot.

I’ve backed off my former 120 grain charges some, 110-115 normally.
