I’ve been out of muzzleloaders for a while and want to get back into it. Ill deer hunt only with it. What would be a good used knight or Thompson center model to look for ? I haven’t had a muzzleloader since knight went out of business years ago. Are the new knights quality rifles or look for a older one? What model is the best bang for the buck ? thanks

What's your budget? If used i think a Knight disc extreme can be had for great prices. If new CVA Wolf or Optima look really good. But it depends on how much you want to spend.

Michiganmuzzy is right although I love the knight muzzleloader rifles I own a CVA Accura V2 and I have to be honest it is the most accurate ML I have ever owned. And I have owned TC , Knights Traditions and none have been as accurate as my CVA ACCURA V2 also very very easy to clean.

Thanks for the reply my budget is around the $450 range . Was looking at a used knight or Thompson center

You could buy brand new Accura in that range,or basically any used rifle you want. I have shot 6 or 7 different load combos out of my Accura and not got better than 1.5” at 100 yds. But my used Austin Halleck will shoot 1” all day paid $250 for that. Leupokf Vari-x 2 3-9 included

I really like my Traditions Vortek Strikerfire rifle. With a scope the slide to cock the rifle is a lot easier to get at then a hammer under the scope plus I was able to set the scope in low rings since there is no worry about clearing the hammer.
The rifle shoots 300 grain XTP bullets into a clover leaf at 100 yards, no issue igniting BH209 right out of the box and its easy to take apart and clean.

For Christmas I purchased my grandson a TC Impact rifle, only reason I picked this rifle over the Vortex is the Impact has a stock spacer that can be removed to decrease the length of pull to 12.5 inches which is great for a young person. The Impact is a good rifle as well, shot good at 100 yards with the load we were shooting which was a 185 grain pistol bullet and 70 grains of BH209. I have some misc bullet I figured would be good for the kid to shot with lower powder charges just to get him used to shooting a muzzy.

You just missed the DISC Extreme sale for $499. New Knights have real Timney triggers again. The bolts are no longer chromed. They are SS. Ramrods are made by Easton from carbon fiber and aluminum. The stocks are still nice and solid. They dont feel like a cheap toy.

And BTW you can buy Lehigh bare primer conversions again. Its very simple to do on an Extreme. Only takes a couple minutes and its well under $50 to do it.

I have many knights and tc guns , that disc extreme sale was a good price on a great gun,but I just purchased a cva Accura MR and I have to say it is a pretty darn nice gun . I just got it Friday and can’t say how it shoots but it’s short lite and balanced perfectly, you can get it at cva.com for 435 shipped free in Camo, with a sling and scope mount, and if you’re a vet knock off 20%, probably the best deal going on now, in your price range it’s probably a gun to look into, and be careful buying used , everyone has a different opinion of good shape. I think there is a knight super disc in the classified on here from Fishhawk, I bought a barrel from him and it was described perfectly, and that’s a great gun to have, good luck

IMHO it depends on what you're looking for. Features: ease of use, cleaning, etc.. The Knight Disc is a great muzzle loader and the discs make for quick and easy shooting, they just tend to be messy to clean. The Thompsons are good rifles as well but as with other rifles similar to this I have seen sticky primers and they are more finicky with loads. Austin and Hallock are one of the most accurate but are IMO on the heavy side. My preference is the Knight Disc Elite. Tapered barrel, well balanced and deadly accurate with the U shaped lug. I have had mine for over 15 years and it shoots MOA to this day.
I purchased two Knight Disc Extremes for a friend and they both shot MOA on the first shooting session. This all said it is like others have said: Ford, Chevy, Dodge.. Buy what appeals to you, options, balance, fit etc..
Just my two cents..

How about this.......watch and read forum threads for which rifle has x issues as well as x atributes . Go handle them at retailers , gun shops , and shows . What feels good to you vs issues ??? Are parts and service near by ??? Etc etc etc.........

Thanks for the replys . Im kinda leaning on getting a older Knight. I have a American Knight i got back when i was younger but was wanting to upgrade. Which model older Knight would be the one to get and what would be the price range of older Knight disc rifles?
Thanks

DISC Original is a great rifle. It will need a couple simple upgrades. Easy to install them but it will set you back another $170ish for all the parts. So if you find a nice DISC Original its gunna take that much to bring it upto an Extreme with a bare primer. Just to turn a DISC into an Extreme FPJ will be about $130.

I ordered a CVA Accura V2 in Nitride with the thumbhole stock and put a Leupold scope on it, 4 shots to sight it in and it was ready to hunt! Gun looks and feels great, can’t wait to shoot it again when the weather turns for the better here! I bought it on Muzzleloaders dot com about a month before Christmas and paid $460 to my door!

I also bought my V2 from Muzzleloaders and it is a very accurate BP rifle which I know that you will enjoy. I put a Nikon Muzzleloader Inline scope on mine.

Traditions
No SS offerings at all. They have not offered SS in years.
Plastic used in some trigger guards and action release parts
Most have no steel support around the firing pin. The alloy frame can wear badly against the 209 primer.
Nothing new about hammerless. Knight had the Vision out around 2006 and LHR had the Redemption. The Vision does not use a generic chromoly reference for barrel material. There are many CM steels. It states 4140 CM steel.
