I ran across a good deal on a knight original disc in 50 cal. Is there any downfalls to buying a original disc?
Were they good shooting rifles? Looks like I’ll be able to get this one for $250. It’s a thumb hole camo stock blued barrel.

If your wanting to shoot it as is, the deal would be ok, if the rifle is in excellent condition. If your wanting to upgrade it to shoot Blackhorn powder then add $140 to the deal. In the end you would still have a blued rifle. Knight had the Disc Extreme on sale recently for $499. Good luck.

I agree with above, I’d also want to convert it to better handle B209 powder. That would add cost.

Back in the day one could get NIB Elites for $200. I always thought that was a fine deal.

Extreme bolt conversion will set you back $129 shipped from Sportsmans. The Lehigh plug $16.50, NFPJ adapter $14.50 and about $8 shipping but its a good idea to get a pack of 4 vents at the same time to save additional shipping later.

$250
$129
$16.50
$14.50
$7.95

Or you can wait for another Extreme sale for $499 and get a Timney trigger plus a nicer stock/ramrod/SS. Then all you need is the Lehigh bare 209 conversion parts.

More than likely... the DISC Original will have a Timney trigger in it. Even if his O DISC is new enough to have a contract trigger it - it is a good trigger.

My Super DISC did not have a Timney. Its a Vehr.

Correct! your Super DISC is a later run of the DISC Originals. The very early runs of the DISC O would have the true Timney. I Have a 50 cal DISC O's with 22" barrel - it has the Timney. At whatever point they moved from the 22" to 26" barrel I would suspect the trigger may have changed - but even then the Vehr with 3 screw adjustments was a good trigger.

Hi Sabotloader. I am looking at a Knight rifle and the only identifier is on the barrel which says Knight disc. I am in Idaho and I would like to know if it could be made to shoot with caps as we can't use the discs in Idaho. Also, were these accurate rifles with all lead conicals as only all lead bullets are allowed.
Thanks in advance and grateful for any help you can provide.

If it only says Knight DISC - more than likely it is a DISC Original.

It can be converted to shoot caps. Actually back in the day Knight offered a device that would allow you to shoot caps in a Orange Plastic Jacket. This would not work for Idaho's rules because of the way the cap is sealed.

To convert it to a modern day cap shooter you will need to get a DISC Extreme Red Plastic Jacket bolt and a 'cap' shooting breech plug and nipple, either musket or #11 - I would suggest a #11 using #11 mag caps or better yet the RWS Dynamit Nobel 1075+

This is a converted DISC Original

They are normally extremely accurate with just about anything you want to shoot from them. I use Bullshop Dan's .504x460 MTNex. T7 powder and use a wad/shot card under the bullet. Power Belts are legal in Idaho and shoot great - I am just not a fan of the bullet. If shot with to much velocity the soft lead bullet can blow up in the animal. Lot of people use them though.

Another small caution more than likely the current bolt is what is called a 'C' tool bolt or hammer assembly. It take a tool to remove the hammer from the bolt. Not a big deal once you figure it out - even if you do not have the handy 'C' tool you can use a 7/16" open end wrench.

Hope some of this helps...

I would check the bore - if not mint, I’d stay away.
Nothing wrong with a blue bbl - just clean after using and take care of it.
i don’t see a problem with getting a #11 Breech plug made with your current bolt, especially if you know someone with a lathe.
Good luck

Thank you Sabotloader and 52Bore. Very helpful information! This one is stainless. I put a borescope in it and it has just a little rust on a few of the lands. Otherwise it looks good. It is not a thumbhole stock.
I have a friend who has a lathe. What would need to be done to convert this rifle to a #11 breech plug?
It is an orange disc model as he had some with it if that helps with your answer. Thanks again for your help

Drill and tap the current Breech plug for a 1/4-28 #11 nipple, on the hex end of the plug. Now the flash hole is in the nipple.
Flip the Breech plug and cut off the opposite end until it’s the desired length.
You new have the same type plug as the Knight plungers, just a little closer tolerances with the bolt as the firing pin should protrude the face if the bolt to pop the cap.

Might I suggest you look around for a Knight MK85. Western Ready, great shooter and it's not uncommon to find them for $200-$300.

Just an idea.

Thank you 52bore and LarryBud!
Do you recommend a site to look for a MK85 for sale?
Are the MK85s as accurate as the discs?
Thank you for the ideas!

MK's are accurate. Do a search on this site and you'll see many comments. They are " dirty " with the open breech, however, I think that's what you'll live with regardless of the gun with the Western Regs for an open breech. Here is a listing on Gun Broker with a lot 2 MKs and a LK for $495. I see the MKs have Williams Peeps set up. I bet some here will be interested in this lot if you're not going that way.

They made a lot of them and MKs show up in gun shops, at shows ( when we had them ) and in pawn shop freguently. look around and see what out there.
