AB22EA70-A6D7-470C-BCB1-512E1913473E.png I’ve been chasing turkeys exclusively with a 20 ga pump for years and decided to go black powder this year. I found a mint TC New Englander with choke tubes for a great deal. Never fooled with BP shotgun before so today was the start. I got really lucky as I got a very adequate pattern with the first load I tried. I’d hoped to not have to carry more than one wad type and the load I’m using allows me that. I’m shooting 70 gr 777 3f with equal volume of #6 lead pellets. My over powder wad is 3 of the over shot card wads. Then the shot with no cup. Then a single over shot card wad. I shot 3 equally good targets at 30 yards. The pattern is good enough for probably 35yds and if steps within that I’ll light him up. Season opens March 15 so I have time to experiment.

Ever thought about using 7 1/2s, out to 30-35 yds they are deadly with head neck shots and throw alot more shot into kill zone..have a buddy who used high brass 7.5 shot and does good.

Awesome deal Rick!! I had a New Englander Shotgun Barrel as well, With Screw in Choke Tubes. Your load is PRECISELY how i Loaded :lewis: I have posted that info before, i got it from Caywood.

Good Luck on the Gobbler Birds!! I am looking Forward to Whacking a Few of these Gobblers as well, It starts the 15th of April for us Here. I’m ready for Spring weather!

Yeah been shooting them in 20 ga. Trying to just start with generic turkey load n see where I end up. I’m sure a mix of sizes, copper plating and buffering will all help. Like I said this was just first day. Plenty more things to try and $ to spend

I just figured I’d try something simple as far as loading n it worked. I can improve on it but I wouldn’t hesitate to tote it out after a bird as is. Can’t believe it’s almost Turkey time. This deer season flew by. The carnage was extensive I busted a good bull elk with the renegade this season and got an antelope too. Good luck to you as well

AWESOME Deal on the Bull Elk!!! What Bullet did you BUST him with? Antelope is something I would like to try for some Day, It’s a Permit ONLY deal here, and WAY Down Southern Idaho

This was a HARSH Hunting Season on me, I didn’t even get to Go this Year. Of ALL things, The motor went out of my Little Toyota Pickup the 22nd of October, I was WITHOUT a Rig the ENTIRE Hunting Season. I had the Wifes Car, But that’s pretty much Useless, I went out a WHOPPING 2 Times, Parked her Car and Walked in. After That 2nd Trip i Took my Gear apart, Cleaned everything and Put it away. This is only the 2nd Hunting Season i have missed in my Entire Life. Yep, it SUCKED!! Oh well, This year Coming! :lewis:

BIG CONGRATS On the Bull Elk, and Antelope!!

400 gr conical. Blew through bull at 90 yds. He ran about 30 yds n diedView attachment 7638

DARN!! That looks like a DANDY!! A neat Pic as Well!

Elk Hunting= NO COUNTRY for Old Men :D When a guy gets an Elk down, He’s about to get his Metal TESTED :D I’ve been there, SEVERAL Times, And wouldn’t trade it for nothing in the World :lewis:

Long story. But better now

SCARY!!

It’s a Helpless feeling, This Country has Caught Fire several Times since I’ve lived here, We spent at least 2 Summers in Smoke, and Stayed til Fall Weather Put them out. It was a Challenge just looking across my Backyard, A Sickening and Helpless feeling!

Yeah I’ve been lucky. Hunted elk for the last 4 seasons and shot a bull each year. Last 2 with muzzleloader. All at 10k feet n public land. Same guy helped me pack out each time. It ain’t no joke especially with this dang asthma. Wish I’d have started chasing them 30 years ago...

Thats TERRIBLE !!!! WOW !!!!

put some 7.5 on bottom of 6's , it will the voids in the pattern

And, try the Skychief load. Guy with that screen name over at the Muzzleloading Forum, and on American LongRifles forum discovered it by accident.

Nobody can figure out WHY it works, but testing by dozens of different shooters in the U.K., Canada, and the U.S.A. prooves that it does work to tighten up patterns, as well as extend those patterns from 5-10 yards on average over whatever was the norm for that barrel.

It is basically what you are already doing.

1.) Powder charge

2.) 1 standard thickness, 0.125" thick, nitro card wad, or..... several 0.025" thick over shot card wads

3.) Shot charge

4.) 1thin, 0.025" thick, over shot wad

5.) And, last BUT NOT THE LEAST....
Soak a 0.500" thick vegetable fiber wad in olive oil (other oils work) until it is sopping wet. Squeeze out most of the excess oil, leaving enough that when loaded over top of the card wad that is over the shot, it will squirt out a ring of oil down the sides of the barrel (experimentation required).

DO NOT TRY SUBSTITUTING ANY OTHER TYPE OF WAD FOR THE 0.025" OVER SHOT WAD & THE 0.500" VEGETABLE FIBER WAD.

Everyone that has tried a substitute has failed to obtain Skychief's results.

I’m familiar with the skychief load but that’s what I’m trying to avoid at the moment. I want a simple load with as few parts as possible...mainly, I want to only have to carry one type of wad.

You can up your shot charge without issues. I will have to check my load data for my old TC New Englander 12ga. Pretty sure it was 80grns FFG Goex and 1- 1/2 oz of #5's. Same card stack as you are using. 777 is pretty hot powder, upping your shot charge should help tighten your pattern. (not that it is bad to begin with) I took a couple birds with mine before Lewis bought my 12 ga barrel. He chickened out and sold it off before killing a turkey with it though.:elmer:

I’m going to do that next time out. Plan is to up it with 7 1/2s mixed in too. And with 777 running around 10% hotter than BP I should be able to up the lead with no issues.

just got my 1st BP shotgun- Pedersoli 12ga Dbl Barrel 30" it has #11 nipples, if using T7 instead of BP should I change to a hotter cap as well to say mag#11 or 209? I haven't shot it yet & I'm some kinda chompin at the bit. I will be using it for this spring turkey season. I'm in about dead center of prime Osceola territory. We have huge flocks all around here, even right up to the house. My 31yr old blue & gold macaw yells at them out the window her cage is in front of all the time. I'm still doin lots of reading & YT vids learning as much as I can until I get everything I need to shoot it. Then hunt with it. Kind regards

I shoot 777 3f exclusively in all my sidelock rifles and have no trouble with ignition. Use cci mag no 11image.jpg

Cool! Thank you. I was plannin to use #4 shot copper coated pellets in traditional 12ga turkey loads. Your thoughts on that? Everyone else with any knowledge & experience here your input is very welcome & much appreciated too. Kind regards
