I have as the title says a CVA Scout V2 45-70. I have both Starline brass and Hornady brass. I would like to load Hornady 250 grain monoflex bullets with H4198 bullets. Would like to know the standard powder weight amount and the maximum one would use in both cases. The Starlines cases are a bit under 2.1 inches in length, the Hornady a 1/16 inch shorter or so.
I understand the loads in the CVA are lighter than say a Ruger No. 1 but would like some real life loads with the CVA and fps if one knows. I will use the Fed Match primers.
The Starline brass is new, the Hornady is once fired out of the modern lever action length and loading. I am using RCBS dies but also have Lee. Thanks

I do not have the current Hornady manual with the 250 monoflex, sorry. The Hodgdon site lists loads in 3 levels for the 250 Barnes.
This should get you started. Start at the minimum load and I’m betting you’ll be fine. Work it up until you see pressure signs and you’ll know the top end for your rifle.

Thanks for the information. They have listed 3 loads, one for the Trapdoor that I do not have. One for lever actions and one for modern rifles. I would think the CVA would fall in the modern rifle more than the lever action but again perhaps they mean Ruger No. 1. My CVA has a barrel at the breech of 1.06 inches, my Ruger No. 1 about 1.2 inches. Quite a difference, I want a safe load with the CVA but would like to be nearer the higher end for it for the extra speed. Recoil is not a a factor for me.

What does CVA say? They should have some sort of testing data available, as far as the pressure the rifle will withstand, or load recommendations, or?????

Before I converted my Apex to sml I was shooting strong action loads up to 50k psi. With some like trap door actions the action cant take as much a beating. Straight wall cartridges are thin and will only handle so much pressure and case capacity for powder column. The barrel contour at the chamber area is the same for 45-70 and say 300 win mag but the 300 win mag pressures are upward of 60k psi. I discussed this with a couple of gun smiths at the same time when working up loads for sml.

The Hodgdon materials are helpful but I think they could be wrong. The pressure listed for a 300 grain bullet in a lever action at 55 grains of H4198 is 27,600. With 56.5 grains and a 250 grain bullet it shows 38,700. I just find it hard to see how that could be. With 60 grains of H4198 and a 300 grain bullet it is 40,000. Not much higher than the lighter 250 loading and with less powder.
I also wanted to load up some 300 grain Barnes originals in my CVA Scout V2 with Starline brass but will hold off until I can get a safe load. The 60 grain load could require a compressed charge. I was thinking 55 grains of H4198 with the 300 BOs might be doable.
Any real world use would be helpful. Thanks

I often see different loading suggestions from the manufacturers when dealing with lead core vs. monolithic bullets. Mono's are harder and takes more to engrave the rifling. Maybe that's why they are showing higher pressure for the monolithic?

That could be but when I visit the Hodgdon site they just list bullet weights, not by type or manufacturer. Hence some of my questions.

No, Hodgdon lists exactly what brand and style bullet for each weight that you have selected from their checklist. See the header in sdporter's attachement? 250 Barnes TSX FN.

Thanks, I did not notice that. Will check again. Thanks again for your help.

I wish they had a load listed for the 300 grain Barnes Originals.

Kinda an older thread, but I just chronographed some 45-70 loads with IMR-4198 powder. My bullet was a 300 grain Cast Performance lead bullet, hardness factor 18-21, GC.

I loaded at 44, 46, & 48 grain levels, fired out of a Henry Lever, 18.5” barrel.

I ended up with a slight mix on my 44/46 grain loads, there were at 1950, then 1975 FPS average. The 48 grain charges averaged 2030 FPS with noticeably more recoil.

I have most manuals, even with the 3 levels of 45-50 gun types, data & pressure limits vary more than most other cartridges. I can’t see wanting to shoot anywhere near 51+ grains of 4198 with most bullets. Even the stronger & lighter Ruger #1 would have stout recoil.

The Hornady manual seems the best with realistic data & FPS expectations. I also loaded some light loads with 26/28 grains of IMR-4227, ‘trapdoor safe’.

I plan to load up 40 or so of the higher loads if I need any for hunting. Right now I plan to be in the 45-46 charge level, 300 grain. With my shorter barrel, 1950+ FPS is more than enough.

Great information, my Marlin has a similar barrel length and I am getting ready to do some more reloading for it.

Not what is asked but I just loaded some 325 gr FTXs with H4198 and at 46 gr showed no signs of pressure. The max load for this bullet is lusted at 47.9 gr.
I think you'd be safe with 50 to 52 gr
