I went to Drill & Tap my Oldest TC Renegade Tang today for a Stock TC Peep sight, I Hit a Hollow/Void in the Tang?? Like a full 1/4 inch in length Void, It was Just a Shell in this area, to one side. I have Drilled & Tapped Several of these over the last few years, They are SOLID. This is a First for me, never seen anything like it? These things were a Cast Part, this one obviously didn’t get Filled out

I have a Friend fairly close by that is a good Tig Welder, Hopefully i can get him to Tig this up good & Solid for me, i will have to Refinish, and Blue it, Not a Big Deal, Just a slight Set back. Just thought I would share this, As I’ve never seen anything like this With one of these Old TC Tangs? As the title say’s, A first time for everything :D

Once the Center bit Popped through the “Shell” and i realized it was a Void, i started poking around and made it larger, trying to see how far it ran? UGLY

I broke the ends off a Qtip and used it to Push inside to Show how deep the Void is, ODD Deal

This was off of an Old, LOW Serial # Thompson Center Renegade, probably early 70s, I am pretty sure TC Made these here in the US, or had them Made here? I really don’t know that for sure? But i highly doubt they were farmed out to China back then.

This was an odd deal for sure, It being a Cast part, it just didn’t get filled out properly, and of all things the “Void“ was EXACTLY where i needed the Hole to mount a Peep, Go figure :)

I am actually thinking about Scrapping this thing and just getting another one, They aren’t that difficult to find

even today sand cast fills are never without question. In my line of work we can spend hrs machining a block that will see 2500 PSI and wouldn't you know it right at the end the machinist will find a void. We go for months if not yrs without seeing then somewhere in there production, most likely at start up, we see a batch of them. Glad you shared

I look at this as a RARE Fluke deal, I have drilled & tapped Numerous of these Old TC Tangs in the last few years, my own, and for others, And this is the first time i have ever seen one like this, or even heard of it? Had i not Drilled this Tang to mount a Peep sight, I would never have known the Void was there? It looks perfectly Flawless from the exterior

This kind of makes you think about Cast Breech Plugs 😬 RICE Barrel Breech Plugs are CNC machined, from Solid Bar stock (4140 CM steel)

I am sure it is/was a fluke. Usually once they get it dialed in the mfg. is good. Even with today's x-ray technology we still see it happen. Like anything else mfg. and built by a human so always a % of error. Good thing is T/C and or their partners had GREAT quality control.

Wow! Just last week I drilled and tapped a 70's T/C tang for a peep sight as well. How often does that happen?

Fortunately my job didn't discover any voids!

As i said above, this is the 1st one i have ever seen like this, and I’ve Drilled & Tapped quite a few of these Old TC Tangs, i say it’s EXTREMELY RARE
