Re:

What he said :D I've got another Toller since my original post, he turned 2 on Saturday. Just spent 3 weeks in SD hunting phez, think he has the hang of this pheasant thing now. He takes his job very seriously LOL.

That dog loves his new job!

My female Springer (Dottie) is in heat, so my parents agreed to watch her at their house to keep her and her brother apart. Now, mind you they live about 1 mile East of Midway Airport in Chicago.

The dogs aren't hardmouthed at all, and will hold on to a bird, etc. until you take it from their mouth.

Mon called me at work last Thursday to say that she really shouldn't let Dottie out in the back yard unsupervised. Thinking the worst, I was unprepared for what she told me. When she called Dottie back in the house (10:00 p.m.) from her nightly potty break, she had to call her a few times. As Dottie was coming to the door, Mom realized that she had something in her mouth and slams the door closed, calling for my Dad. Dad gets downsatirs and see's that she has a 'possum in her mouth. Now, Dad is in his underwear, so he has to go back upstairs, get dressed and goes outside. He somehow gets her to lay it down, and seeing that the 'possum is all open mouthed and stiff, he thinks that she must have killed it. So he throws it in the covered trash can in the alley.

The very next morning, Mom says, she lets Dottie out again to go potty. This time she comes back to the door with a Fox Squirrel in her mouth. Same story, get Dad, he goes outside and gets her to "drop it". He's suprised to see the squirrel dash off. Now the squirrels are jumping from garage to garage and avoiding the yard!

That night, Dad goes to throw out a bag of garbage, and what's waiting for him? A pissed off 'possum in the trash can!

Mom's taking her out to potty on a leash now.........

LOL My English Springer was the best dog I ever had. If there was a bird in the field she’d find it. It killed me when I had to put her down.

I know it hurt to lose her. We just lost an old male last month. He was at least 12 years old and had COPD. We had been giving him a pill for it over 2 years, but it finally caught up with him. He was always left in the yard because of his age and he was found dead where he had seen us bury other dogs. Dogs are so much smarter than humans say they are. Blaze will be missed.

Here is a photos of my dog the one is a limit of pheasants and geese I shot on opening day of IA's pheasant season. The other is a coyote he chased into a lake in IA and killed it in chest deep water on him. thats why the yote looks like a drowned rat.

He is tuff!

Beagles hands down.owned them for 40 yrs. All my beagles I owned would hunt quail as well as pheasant and you could always tell when they were birdy instead of sniffing bunnies. I even had one female who would retrieve rabbit and birds and bring them to me even if i didn't kill them:)

english springer spaniels......... I had a brother/sister, they were incredible. I miss them so much, as cancer took both a couple of years ago. I have hunted over almost everything at one time or another, but love flushing dogs the most.

My son gave me one for my 40th birthday. Both parents were fuel champions and were from England. I was told my pup was from their first litter here in the US. She was the easiest dog to train. I had her trained on voice, whistle and voice commands. If there was a bird in the field she would find it. Even used her for Dove hunting and would find and retrieve the birds from the corn fields. All she wanted to do is to hunt, love you and be loved. Oh and did she love getting into deep snow. Man was that comical. Unfortunately, I only had her 5 years until I had to put her down due to Liver Cancer. I cried like a baby when I had to do that. I know I cried more for that dog than some family members.

I laugh. When I grew up I would just use the farm dog. That changed over the years. Several times as they aged, died, and were replaced. No purebreds, nothing fancy. Whatever family had "a puppy" at the time the existing dog passed. That was the new dog.

Mostly we learned what skills the dog had and adjusted to use its skills. They all chased rabbits. After a few hunts and getting a few pheasants in their face they would hunt birds. We killed a lot of pheasants. Im sure if there were any videos of our hunts they would be side splitters.

As life moved on we did us Labs, Spaniels, Retrievers, etc. They added class to our hunts but not anymore fun.

WPG (Wirehaired Pointing Griffon) I could tell you stories about my Annie that would make you laugh, or cry, or say "no way". I have tried to write some of the stories but the paper keeps getting wet. The WPG is an all around hunter. If you make it known to her or him, what makes you happy, they will die trying, because making you happy is all they care about.

Well I need two votes because these fur buddies are some of the best that I have ever had and they are only 3 years old.

I think it depends on your application, we hunt feathers and fur here, the notable fur animal being deer.

English springer, had beagles when I was 13,whent to Britney when I was was in my mid twenteis. I think whent to a springer around 40 .,easy to train dog .and stay in your property line, my will hunt anything ,even barks treed squirrels. Never looked back have had 4 of them. The try color one I have now goes where ever I go and sleeps in bed with me.30 years of springers and joy!

I have traveled to and lived in Germany twice with the same Golden retriever. It could smell ducks under water. Was death on pheasants hiding under snow. But alas I can no longer lift that much, especially when wet. I now am on my second AWS American Water Spaniel. Great eyes and ears and loves people and kids.
