Im thinking this would be an exclusively round ball gun.

What can be shot accurately in it?

Any load data.

help and info please.

A 1:70 twist will generally require powder charges in the 70-120 grain range for best accuracy. What is the depth of the rifling? If the grooves measure 0.016" deep, as do most modern muzzleloading barrels such as Colerain & Rice, then a patch measuring at least 0.022"-0.028" thick, as measured compressed under the barrel of a micrometer, and 0.575" diameter pure lead ball would be a good place to start. With a properly relieved crown, this tight combination will not tear, will probably need a short starter, and once 8"-10" down the bore, load easily all the way to the breech. The most important thing is to completely fill the grooves with patch material. If you do so, then there will be no need for cleaning between shots, as the patch material from each subsequent patched ball will push any fouling down on top of the new powder charge, in essence cleaning the bore for you.

And, by filling the grooves with cotton duck patch material, a complete gas seal is made, insuring no gas blowby, and max velocity.

The key is the crown of the rifle. It should be smooth and RADIUSED, not angled as from the manufacturer. A radius crown may be achieved by taking increasingly finer grits of wet/dry paper, and using one's thumb to radius the factory 60° angled crown. Plug the barrel with a wad of cotton to prevent the grit & steel particles from dropping down the bore. Use your thumb to press against the crown, and rotate the barrel back-and--forth 10-20 times. Then rotate the barrel 90°, and repeat. Keep turning the barrel 90° until you have completed 360°. Keep this up until you have radiused the crown approximately 1"/16 deep. You will know you are close when you can push a greased, patched ball approximately three quarters of the way into the bore with light thumb pressure.

I have a .58 cal muzzle loader that has a 1:64 twist and it is very accurate with a patched ball and 100 grains of 2F BP. For me the trick was to find the correct thickness of patch. A 1:70 twist rifle is strictly a patched ball rifle and will not do well with a minie.

Thanks Ed. I have done that to all my guns, ML and CF. It just makes sense.

A 58 can also shoot minies depending on how deeply the rifling is cut.
So we do need to try some minies. Have a suggestion as to where to buy them and how much powder. T& or Pyrodex.

Try Track of the Wolf for cast minie balls. Most minie balls did not require large charges of powder. Do you have the Lyman Black Powder Handbook? It had a lot of basic load info in it. You might need to use a wool wad under the minie if the rifling is too deep, and put half a lubed cotton ball in the hollow base of the minie ball.

Best place to get minies for try it before a mold- Lodgewood. Avoid Pyrodex if at all possible. I've used the subs but still go back to the real deal black. Since I go through upwards of 35lbs+ per year, I just don't worry about a hazmat charge.

My Parker Hale competition load is a RCBS Hogdon, 43g 3f Old Eynsford, RWS caps, beeswax/lard lube. Shoots sub 2moa with iron sights.

I can send you some, I have a mold for them that I built.

Only if I can send you some money. You have been way good to me already. Let me help support your bad habit. LOL
Im thinking 12 or so would be enough to get an Idea if they will shoot or not.

Let me see if I can dig them up tonight when I get home.

I’m still in a huge mess after moving, and my son and DIL sold their house so we have all their stuff in the garage as well. I think I can get to the bullets though.

Dunno if any 58 Power Belts are available, but my 54 1:70 GMB shoots 295 gr PBs very well and to the same POI as PRB with the same powder load. The lighter, shorter PBs should work best...if you can find them in 58.

Beautiful as usual. Lots of summer ahead so dont be in a hurry. Sounds like you have plenty going on.
Still haven’t had a chance to look yet. Haven’t forgotten. Life’s been happening around our place.
