For a short handy gun it's hard to beat a break open. I have a Savage bolt action 458 SML and an NEF break open 458 SML. They both have 20 inch barrels yet the break open NEF is about 4 inches shorter.

I use LEUPOLD 1x - 4x by 20MM. I keep it on 1x most of the time. Great for hunting thick woods. It's so quick you could shoot skeet with it.
