Whats the shortest you would go? New bolt gun build.

For a short handy gun it's hard to beat a break open. I have a Savage bolt action 458 SML and an NEF break open 458 SML. They both have 20 inch barrels yet the break open NEF is about 4 inches shorter.

Whats the shortest you would go? New bolt gun build.

This is a Savage long action ML with 20 inch McGowan .458 barrel and 1x18 twist. Handles great, shoots great.

    Bullpup muzzleloader, so cool

That looks like one butt ugly home made gun. Break opens can get really short without putting the powder charge under you're chin. This is an NEF 12 ga converted to 45 sml. 20 inch barrel. The 1 x 22 twist is marginal. I used 1 x 18 in my other guns and it was better for sabotted bullets. twist.

    Smokeless for newbies

#1 rule. WITNESS MARK ON YOUR RAMROD. The three scenarios that cause nearly all of the accidents are; 1. Cease fire at the range while you're in the middle of loading. 2. Chatting with some one at the range while you're loading. 3. Putting the gun away loaded and forgetting when the gun is...

    I hope it's nothing serious

Hunting desire often is a product of who you hunt with. When I was in my 20's I had 3 close friends that hunted with me every year and all over the place.(Colorado, Ohio, Ontario, Pa. NY, CT). Then one passed, one quit, and one became a camp queen. I was the only one hunting seriously and I...

    leupold vxlll adjustment

Your bud probably read some where that turning the adjustment "up" makes the xhairs go down which is correct. Where he fell down is in understanding that when the xhairs go down the POI goes up.

    209 primers in smokeless muzzleloader?

My tree stand gun is a .458 stub job on an NEF 12 gauge conversion to SML. I used the Arrow Sports rear sealing 209 BP with carbide insert. Three seasons now and many rounds down range with zero sealing problems. Use a 1x18 twist or faster for sabots. You can get away with a slower twist with...

    Plunger guns vs break opens

I assume by "plunger gun" you are referring to bolt action? Despite bolts being slightly more accurate (1 moa VS 1.5 moa) the break open guns average about 3 inches shorter for the same barrel length. This is more important to me than a slight accuracy advantage as most shots here in Ct are 100...

    Deer liver and heart?

I shoot 2/3 of the way up and a few inches behind the shoulder. The bullet goes under the backstrap and over the heart/liver but clips both lungs on the way thru. The up side is every shot's a killer and no meat is ruined. The down side is the deer will go anywhere from 25 to 200 yds before...

Hunting with Triple 7- clean barrel or fouled barrel

I always hunt with a clean barrel. It's the only thing I can consistently duplicate even if I'm in a tent in the middle of nowhere.

    which ignition

Been using Federal 209a primers for 10 years with instant ignition down to zero degrees. I have both bolt action and break open SML's. That said, I've never used a module so can't speak to their benefits.

    Primer question

Been using Federal 209A primers forever in my SML's lighting 4198 and RL7. Never a hiccup even down to zero degrees.

    Deer liver and heart?

Whenever there's a buck on the ground camp supper that night is heart, liver, potatoes and onions. I'm drooling just typing this!

Tree stands. Looking for a climber.

I'm a big guy,(6ft 255 lbs) and I have 3 Summit tree stands. I love them all but the 180 is my favorite. The part away from the tree is curved on the 180 so you can face the tree if you want. I always have my back to the tree but the extra legroom of the curved front makes the stand roomy both...

    FOR SALE 1x scopes

I use LEUPOLD 1x - 4x by 20MM. I keep it on 1x most of the time. Great for hunting thick woods. It's so quick you could shoot skeet with it.

    Thoughts on revolvers....

Ah, the model 28. Haven't thought of that gun for a while. I converted mine to 44 magnum back in the 70's when you had to be royalty to get a 29.

    Sad day father passed

So sorry for your loss. Be consoled that he didn't suffer. My mother suffered for tree months before finally losing to lung cancer caused by smoking..
