Muzzy Journey: Step 2 + FNG powder ponderings...

I've only ever used #11 caps, as my state doesn't allow BH or primers. And I'm happy with them. Personally had bad experience with T7, so now I stick to Pyrodex. Your results may vary. I've never even seen real black in a store. If I could, I'd like to try BH209, as it's supposed to be cleaner...

    .44 magnum For Elk Hunting

I was hunting in Alaska a couple years ago, and a local indigenous man said most of his tribe hunted caribou with .22's, and I have no reason to doubt him. They've taken about 100% more caribou than I have. I still prefer to use my 7mm WSM.

are powerbelts any good on deer

I used the all lead powerbelts in a .54 cal MK85. In a typical 100 yard three shot group, two might be touching but one would be 3 inches out. But they did drop deer, as in my avatar. Now, I use No Excuse in a .50 cal Bighorn. A lot better accuracy, and a lot cheaper.

    Muzzle loader Scope

Thanks for asking the question. I'd heard the same thing at a local gun shop and was 99% sure it wasn't true.

    The scope, maybe?

    Idaho Muzzy Regulation Change Proposal

IDF&G emailed this out a couple months ago, I guess to all Idaho license holders. The window for input has past, but it wouldn't hurt to write them anyway. I wrote and told them I didn't think it too hard to find lead bullets, but the ones available over the counter sucked. I bought my lead...

    AR-15 Muzzleloader

The assault muzzleloader. Gotta wonder who will be more upset, the anti-gun crowd, or our strict traditional ml brothers. 🤔 🤣 Personally, if they had an exposed ignition #11 cap model, (Idaho legal) I'd start saving my pennies.

    New guy with question

I do prefer stainless. It can still rust, but it is more forgiving. Not familiar with the buckmaster, but others will be. The CVA Wolf is another popular intro muzzleloader, and it seems to have a loyal following.

Pros and cons of pellets versus granular powder

For the shotgun, I don't guess it matters, but I've seen five grains of Pyrodex make a pretty radical difference in accuracy in my Bighorn. I cannot imagine going to (settling for) pellets, even if my state allowed it.

Random thoughts on the future of inlines

Inline, sidelock, flintlock, blunderbuss, boomerangs, whatever. The more seasons I get to hunt, the better. If they can make it more restrictive, better yet. If that deters other hunters, that's more game for me.

Poll - What style of bullet are you currently primarily using for hunting in an inline rifle?

Full bore conical, as required by the Idaho Fish and Game. I hated using them, as long as I was sticking to what I could find off-the-shelf, locally. The accuracy just sucked. Once I broke down and ordered some No Excuse, sized to my barrel, I didn't mind so much anymore.

    Segregated Heard

Reminds me of how the .45 Auto is proof that old, fat, short and slow can still get the job done.

    Segregated Heard

Why yes, those blue bands are the lube that the bullets came with. More pictures? Like asking a grandma to see more pic of the grand kids. You can see the area burned a few years back. Kind of makes it a different kind of pretty now.

    Segregated Heard

Drew my second choice of an early season antlerless elk tag. After four days of chasing them around the mountain, I was closing in on a big bull who just kept on singing. Possibly a couple different bulls. One draw short, my cow stepped out of the trees, and hesitated when she saw me, just long...

    Protecting the kill?

I leave scent through whatever bodily functions present. Never had a problem. Just killed a cow elk yesterday and left 2/3 of her overnight. I'd seen a pack of about 8 coyotes near by a couple days prior, but she was all still there, waiting for me to pack her out.

    Newbie from New Mexico

No Knights are made to shoot smokeless. Can they be modified? Don't know. As far as whether smokeless is what "muzzleloading should be?", that's a personal choice, I suppose. Not for me. It's also a legal issue, by state game laws, if you want to hunt with it. Read your hunting regs carefully...

    MK85 for deer this year

In my Bighorn, 420 grain NE, .502, 80 grains RS by volume, and a wad. I get about 1.25" groups at 100 yds, with a peep. I don't think I could do much better than that at all, without a scope. As the Bighorn is pretty much an MK85 copy with a 26" barrel, that should be a good starting point.

Any pre season trail cam pics? I’ll start.

Not very many bulls stopping by, but this cam is just looking across the driveway where I grew up. They love the apple tree. Need to plant more of those. Unfortunately, this has become a tough place to draw ml tags.

One thing you wish you’d started using or doing sooner?

Not sure... maybe 1.5 to two times around. If you go too thick, it won't thread right. Then you know that's too much. I use it on the nipple threads too, which is trickier. I always make sure the hole is not obstructed. Not sure if the spark from the cap would cut through to tape or not. Maybe...

One thing you wish you’d started using or doing sooner?

Teflon tape instead of breech plug grease. Easier, less messy, and more effective. And No Excuse bullets, sized to my barrel. I may try other sized conicals, but I will never go back to the off-the-store-shelf offerings.
