Building an Alexander Henry Target Rifle from a Rod England Kit

Thank you Bad Karma, you are too kind! The lock and such have been color cased and I charcoal blued the trigger guard and buttplate. I just have to finish the rust blueing of the barrel and I will post photos of the competed rifle. Curtis

    Cap and ball deer?

They are legal in Missouri, .40 cal and up so it would have to be a .44 at least for a revolver most likely. Curtis

Another casting Tip (Building up a GOOD Sprue)

I have been following this thread and a couple others on casting tips by Lewis. I had been having a little trouble getting consistent weights on my larger bullets and the tips have been a great help! I upped my lead temp to almost 800 degrees and made a LARGE casting ladle to help with getting...

    Flintlock Long Guns

Thanks! I love my modern rifles and hope to never part with them, but like you was drawn to the traditional guns. I bought a used percussion rifle and pistol at a guns show about 15 years ago and was hooked! That lead to me building my first flintlock, then attending a class how to build...

    Flintlock Long Guns

Bstorric, I make the guns from scratch, starting with a plank and a handsaw. I typically purchase the lock and barrel, and sometimes buy a cast trigerguard and buttplate, sometimes make them by hand. The balance of the furniture (triggers, nosecap, ramrod pipes, patchboxes, etc) and inlays I...

    Flintlock Long Guns

Thanks RFD and Lewis, your flattery humbles me! Rfd, in my opinion there is no rifle too purdy to take afield, life is too short to hunt only with ugly guns, lol! There are lots of 150 - 250 year old originals that saw lots of use back in the day and are still beauties to behold. My guns...

Hankins Smooth Bullet Sizing Die, Complete Kit

I am using the sizing die for PP bullets, after wrapping with paper. My Alex Henry has a .451 bore and my Shilo Sharps has a .450 bore. So far I have used cast .443 bullets for the A. Henry and .442 BACO swaged lead bullets for the Sharps. Not sure if it will be possible, but I will be...

Hankins Smooth Bullet Sizing Die, Complete Kit

Lewis, I purchased one of the Hankins complete kits in .45 to use for my .451 Alex Henry rifle as well as my Shilo Sharps 45-70. Haven't shot anything I sized with it yet but I am very impressed with it's quality and the results it has produced. Looking forward to seeing your results when you...

Building an Alexander Henry Target Rifle from a Rod England Kit

Thanks for the kind words Greenswylde! Sent the breech, standing breech and lock out for color case work last week, will post some pics when I get the parts back and the rust bluing on the remaining parts finished. Curtis

What happens if you dry fire a flintlock with it primed?

No boom, just a Whoosh! and flash in the pan. Like lighting a pile of loose powder. Curtis
