heart/lung shot vs neck shot ?

I was trying to fill a doe tag a few years ago. I was sitting on a small rise overlooking a swamp. As the light waned,I saw a couple of deer moseying away. With nothing to lose I grunted at them,a big mama doe was curious and investigated. The only shot I had was straight on.I aimed for the white...

6.5 Carcano in Black Powder for the Vetterli

I don't have any loading advice, however I did inherit one of these carcano rifles after grandpa passed. He acquired his in Sicily during the war . It was said that these surplus rifles were never shot and only dropped once. The were issued to the Italian military, who were not noted for...

Your best “rescue” stories, related to BP firearms?

I don`t know if this counts as a rescue, but here goes; My first Bp gun was a CVA Blazer . I bought it used from my local sporting goods store. After using it for about a season and a half, the screws holding the barrel to the stock stripped out, rendering the gun inoperable. It got put in a box...

    Shooting sticks

I was in my local BassPro store with my Bil from Iowa . We happened upon the aisle of the shooting sticks. My B.I.L.. asked if I used them.Being frugal by nature [cheep] I asked him if he carried a pair of pruners. He said yes ,I replied I cut my own recyclable monopod .I cut a 3 ft sapling...

bullet for best blood trail with a 50 cal. ?

I've killed deer with pb , prb and sabots.my preference is the 300 gr. XTP.The blood trail is shorter [or DRT].There is very rarely an exit . To me, this says that the bullet is dumping all the energy inside the animal.I aim for a broadside shot in the heart /lung area or a high shoulder shot...

    Stimulus check

A couple of days ago I received notification from the IRS of a stimulus payment of 1200$. I didn't think that was correct but maybe they deducted some because I did not vote for the guy who won. After rereading the paperwork I discovered it was the payment of 600 x2 , that we received in jan.I...

    Any love for Powerbelts?

personally, I'd rather walk up to a dead deer with one hole in it.I have used Pbs on probably a handful of kills and always liked the stopping power of them. The biggest negative I can think of regarding Powerbelts is the price. When loading up the muzzleloader for deer season I find myself...

    CVA mountain rifle & bobcat

Powerbelts perform very well on whitetails. most of my kills with them were a Bang- flop. Because of the high cost of them I usually used them for a reload. My frugal nature[ cheapness] bristles at shooting a projectile that costs close to 2 bucks at a critter when a full bore lead bullet costs...

    Question for Idaholewis?

I would like to chime in here with my gratitude to Idaholewis. I recently purchased the Frankford Arsenal digital scale he recomended. I weighed some R.E.A.L. bullets I bought off a guy in Tenn. Out of a batch of 50, I had about 35 good ones.It was a real eye opener. THanks for the advice Lewis
