    Gonna try something

I know a lot of shooters think more is better in the powder department. I cut my teeth on muzzle loaders, long before inline rifles. And back then we shot very mild moderate loads actually. A very common load was 70 grans of Pyrodex RS and a patched roundball. I never knew it was such an...

    Marathon .32cal 2nd outing

It looks like you had a lot of fun. It was cold and raining here (in the low 50's) so I was not able to shoot. But tomorrow they said it could hit 64 with rain again so that might be out. I really want to shoot some of the inline rifles I own. They have not been shot in a long time. I...

LOOKING TO DO SOME HOG HUNTING IN MICHIGAN WITH MY M.L.

A friend of mine when to Kentucky or Tennessee, one of those states and shot a nice sized wild hog. He packed it with and in ice and rushed home here, only to find that no one would butcher it for him. Lucky for him an old farmer offered to butcher it for him at his home. Check with a few...

    Hi From Oregon

Those are all great rifles but I too have a White UM and that has to be one of my favorite all time rifles. With big lead it is a hard rifle to beat. Welcome to the forum. Great to have you here.

    Substitute for Breech Plug Grease

Many years ago I picked up a tube of Slick 50 One Grease. Its all I use. I just smear the stuff on and over the threads of the breech plug. And then screw it in. They always come back out. And that tube has lasted for so many years I can not even think of the year I purchased it. I would...

    Peep sights and better vision

I will have to give that a try. I have some 1.75 readers that I could try. But next time in the big town I will stop at the dollar store and grab a 1.25 reader. Might be a great help.

    100gr pyrodex pellets/ 290 Barnes tmz/elk?

As I think back for a way to answer this question I often remember the old Jim Shockey hunting shows. He hunted elk, bear, moose, etc with a Knight Rifle, a Nosler bullet and 100 grains of Pyrodex RS for years until he began selling his name to on manufacturer brands, then he went to T/C Rifles...

    King of the Mtn.

How far away was the bear when you shot? That Barnes looked like it behaved perfect. Also how far did it run after the shot? That is a nice looking bear!

    Back cover of MB

interesting the powder charge they mention as an accurate load. Now days, people push powder through their rifles like they were magnum center fires.

    Prone vrs bench

I have a friend that spent years in the Marines. And one afternoon (many years ago) we went out to shoot. I of course took a table and a bench mount system to shoot from. He took a blanket. And he shocked the devil out of me when he spread that blanket out, laid down on it and proceeded to...

    Mag Spark

I would not recommend shooting BlackHorn out of your Lyman. Just because you have a Mag Spark on the rifle the fire channel through the drum/bolster is still no bigger. Plus you run the risk of damage to your rifle. Just be happy you have a great rifle and it shoots good. As for the Mag...

    Triple 777

Man people do use the finer grade powder in their rifles. The advantages ... only your rifle knows. Some claim better accuracy, some just the opposite. I personally use the FFg instead of the finer grade. I find accuracy excellent and power more then adequate. There will be a slight...

    Pedersolli misfire

Before I shoot any rifle, inline, percussion, or flintlock, I swab the bore with Isopropyl (Rubbing) alcohol that I get from Wal Mart. Get the stronger version as it comes in two dilutions. Let that alcohol swab draw out all the oils in the barrel. Then dry patch it. And the reason for...

    Cabin company

Shell Lake is up in my neck of the woods, a little west of me. Its a nice area. Good fishing over there. I had one bear around the house many years ago. I kid you not he had to be over 500 pounds. I say this because when he'd walk by a 55 gallon feed drum chained to a tree, his back was...

    Pedersolli misfire

I have long admired a Pedersoli rifle. But now I simply have the rifle I want custom made. They are just a beautiful rifle that Tennessee Valley Muzzle loading makes.

    Cabin company

I had one bear bold enough to come up, onto my front porch near my gas grill. He even looked in the kitchen window at me. I ran him off twice. I didn't like him looking into the room windows. Finally I fixed him good. I went to the dollar store and bought those cheap magnetic alarms people...

    Pedersolli misfire

that is very possible. When I swab a barrel I have my cleaning solution be it isopropyl alcohol, windex, rusty duck, even dish water in small spray bottles. I get a lot of them with the bug juice I use here. I just pull the top off an empty off bottle, rinse it out and fill it with a cleaner...

    Pedersolli misfire

First thing I would check is the nipple. Is it clear, clean and open. Then I would clean the rifle again and be sure to get it super clean. When cleaned, replace the nipple and then ,... blow down the UNLOADED barrel. Put your finger just above the nipple and see if you can feel your breath...

    cva hunterbolt trigger mod?

If that is the case, order a new trigger assembly. After it arrives and you're sure it fits and works, then have at the old one. You can try adjusting the parts you think would lighten the trigger. Being careful of course not to over lighten. If you good something up, then its easy to take...

    Lead Removal

All I have used lately is Birchwood Casey Bore Scrubber and a good brush. I do the rifle bores good with a wire bore brush (after I spray down inside of the bore and let them sit a little while.) Then I use some patches with the same product on them. I never seem to get too much lead out of them.
