    Mk85 powder

I shoot a Knight Big Horn which is essentially an MK. It is a 50 cal but not converted to shoot 209s. I shoot Goex 2f as I have not seen Swiss anywhere locally. I shoot the 300 gr XTP bullet in a black Harvester crush rib sabot and 85 -90 gr of powder. My longest shot was laser measured at...

    Muzzleloader scopes

I currently have a Bushnell elite 4 - 12 on my mighty Knighty Bighorn. I normally shoot up to 100 yds here in PA and possibly do not need 12 power but man I like it. Would I go to another scope, possibly but right now you could only have my Bushnell elite if you took it from my cold dead...

    1-38. Pretty versatile twist

I shoot the 300 gr XTPs with good success in a Knight Big Horn inline 1 - 28 twist with the Harvester black sabots. I also get good results with the same bullet/sabot combo in my flintlock with a 1 - 28 twist. I once picked up a box of 300 gr XTP mags and when I shot them they grouped the same...

    powder weight or volume

I only use Goex 2 f and 3 f in all my rifles. I once sat and weighed volume loads. I used 80 grains by volume to weigh. Some were spot on by weight while others were as much as 5 grains up and down by weight. I did find that 3f varied less and was closer to the volume weight when weighed. I...

    Cleaning between shots

talon this works with rifles with a removable breech plug but with rifles such as a flintlock the bore snake just will not work. Your suggestion of using 2 targets has merit and gives valuable info for most hunting situations. On the fast reload I would suggest much practice on the reloading...

    Lyman Deer Stalker

I have thought about casting my own which I did some of for my bro-in-law at his shop when he had it. I used to have some casting supplies but have since gave them to my son-in-law. If I cannot find a commercial bullet that fits I may try casting my own.

    Cleaning between shots

In my opinion what we are talking about here is swabbing between shots, not cleaning. I view cleaning as an all out attack on the dirt and crud everywhere in and on my rifles. I also look at swabbing as removing some or most of the shot residue from inside the barrel in preparation for the...

    Getting into Flintlock hunting...

Bennyj I have used RMC's accusporter for about 10 years or so for PA's late season. I have known the owner of RMC since we were teenagers. The RMC rifle is made with green mountain barrel and an L & R lock both of which are quality products. I have two barrels for mine, one with a 1 - 48...

    The perfect muzzleloading box

I use about the largest plastic tool box and still need more room. I shoot inlines, sidelocks and flinch locks aka flint locks. most of what I carry in the box is applicable to all but each needs a few of its own tools also. This can amount to a lot of stuff but if I had one for each it would...

Welcome from central PA where much smoke is blown and some from our rifles.

    Plunger gun and BH209

I shoot a knight bighorn using the one and only real black powder using 85 - 90 grain loads. When I bought my rifle it came with two nipples, one for #11 caps and one for top hat (musket caps) I tried the #11s first and then the musket caps. I had ignition with both but had trouble loading...

    Lyman Deer Stalker

No they do not start very good. They seem to start too easy and stay that way all the way to the powder. My reconing is that his barrel is just a tad bigger than a standard 50 cal. This only occurred when he switched from Patched round ball to a full bore bullet. He wants a bullet heavier...

    Cleaning between shots

I use straight alcohol to swab between shots when possible. My reason is it evaporates very quickly and seems to clean well enough to get impact the same as a clean barrel and that is my goal. I have shot with a dirty barrel also and find the accuracy is still good enough to punch a deer's...

    Lyman Deer Stalker

My son has this Lyman deer stalker and wants to switch to a full bore lead like the tc maxi ball. The tc maxi balls fit rather loose. Does anyone know of a slightly larger maxi being produced and sold.

What is the most popular bullet weight for hunting Deer

For me in my Knight inline similar to the old MK 85 I use the Hornady XTP 300 regular in a Harvester black crush rib sabot with great results I alsp tried the 300 Grain XTP max or mag and got the same accuracy but no expansion with ffg goex.

    First Flinter

I am right handed but left eye dominant. Yes that may explain a few things. I have been hunting with a flintlock since the mid 70s. I shoot all my rifles left handed. When I started flintlock hunting I could not find a single lefty rifle. I got a right handed one and proceeded to learn what...

    Sighting in distance!

For me I would sight in at 75 yds and then shoot at 50 to see how high it hits and again at 100 to see where it hits there also. If you are within 3 inches high or low at the 50 or 100 yd distance you have the best of both worlds because as Cayuga says you can aim dead on all the way to 100 yds...

    25ACP

I am a modern rifle reloader and have been for a long time. I know of no tool that allows you to change a primer pocket from small to large. Drilling out the flash hole makes sense to me by allowing more fire to the powder. I would not drill too large though because that would allow too much...
