    40 or 45 and why

I shot 50 cals from ‘99-‘02, 45s from ’02-‘19 and 40s from ‘01-forever. I have 3 40s and one 45 which is for sale. I only hunt to 350 yards, but primarily to 200. 40s - less recoil, use less powder, can have flatter trajectory, every bit as accurate, imo are optimized by using full forming...

    Breech plug bushing installation

    Defiance Actions

I have 2 custom 40s and one semi-custom 10ML2/40 PN. One of my custom 40s is an ultralight, 6# 12oz, yet is capable or rather stout loads due to where the weight savings were made. It has a Defiance AnTi action. The action is a definite step up from a good Rem 700, SA SS action.

Alternative duplex load powders to clays and h4198

Clays and other very fast powders were tried as duplex primer powders in 2005; and as good as they performed ignition-wise, they were very erosive on vent liners and bushings. The standard 4759, 5744 and VV110 are better overall choices.

Large Magnum Rifle Primers vs Large Rifle Primers??

A couple of thoughts. BR (benchrest) primers are hotter, to my understanding, than regular primers. I’ve used both LRMPs and LRPs and notice very little difference. Personally, I have no reservations using BR primers.

    LRMP vs 209

AA 2015 is an under appreciated powder.

    Accurate 5744

GM54-120’s pros and cons are dead on. Greatest strengths are easy to ignite and quite temp insensitive. However, velocity vs pressure is poor compared to virtually all other commonly used powders in the 50 cals and especially in 45s. I wouldn’t use it, especially sabotless, in a 45. It would...

    The real Toby Bridges

Toby Bridges has been a major player in MLing from the 1970s. He may have been the 1st to use scopes on traditionally designed Hawken rifles (T/C) . He pushed for inclusion of scopes from the early 80s. Toby has been a true pioneer in the evolution of modern MLing. He was a major player in where...

    Accurate 5744

Bill Ball’s preferred/recommended load was 42g 5744/300XTP in a MMP HPH12 out of his 24” 50 cal barrel. That was the 1st recommended 10ML load. That load remained (42-44g) for several years in the 10ML2 owner’s manuals.

One Bullet to Rule Them All?

‘Most people shoot smokeless loads comparatively fast; however, they don’t have to be fast. If a person wants to shoot a heavy, cast bullet, just shoot it slower still with smokeless powder.

    Michiganmuzzy, I, too, enjoy precisely sizing bullets and obtaining a very high level of long range performance. I’ve been shooting smokeless for 23 years. 50 cal/sabots , then 45/sabots & simultaneously 40/bore sized (2001-2002) , 45 bore sized (2003, & 2019-2020), and since 2020, 40 (3...

    More questions..lol

I’m convinced that a good 40 cal is currently the optimal deer hunting MLer caliber. I’m additionally convinced that saboted 40 cal bullets in a 45 is next best for almost all deer hunters. 40 call Lee die. I use both: one for sizing some bullets for the 45 saboted and the other (399) for...

    More questions..lol

I think I actually called them. Many years ago. Or, maybe, looked it up on their website. Jim (Jims - board name) got me onto this. I, initially, ordered a 0.400” ; but it was too large. Ordered another in 0.399” and it was perfect. After many 1,000s of shots thru 45 and 50 caliber , smokeless...

    40cal CVA

Out of curiosity, what bullet/load are you shooting? I’ve been shooting a 10ML2/40 PN (16 twist) since 2001. Thru 200 yards, it’s 1/3 MOA and 1/2 MOA @300 yards. That’s with sized 402 225/228g AccuMax bullets. Still sub MOA with knurled up 200SSTs and Barnes 195s to 200 yards. I’ve never liked...

    Handi rifle SML

Did you knurl the 195 Barnes to get a slightly tighter fit? Also, to help not drilling the sabots. Annealing the 195Bs also, usually helps accuracy because of quicker, more thorough, obturation. Wool wads are helpful also.

    More questions..lol

Some jacketed bullets have some spring back. Pittmans do. Parker and Furys little to none. Pittmans - run thru 3x and at least once, the next day. A very economical way to shoot 402 sized bullets in sabots is to get a Lee fixed sizing die in 399 ($28) , size the bullets, lightly knurl to help...

    More questions..lol

The quicker the initial pressure rise, the more consistently the bullet will obturate. DI is quicker than HIS and is easier to use in a break open than a bolt action. I use DI in my bolt rifles. However, virtually the same can be obtained by using a duplex. 5-7 g of VV110 under 7-10 less grains...

    Daughter smokeless buck

Congratulations also. The Parker BEs obturate very easily (soft) And are very accurate! That softness causes the fragmentation.

    What size wool wad

The thread starter specifically stated that he was asking this question concerning smokeless powder. Additionally, this is the smokeless muzzleloading section of this board. Why are you here? Are you lost? This isn’t the traditional section of this board. Wads do 2 things: 1) With a round...
