What muzzleloading stuff did you do today?

Resolved to show my Dirty Girls more love. Been breechloadin' kinda heavy lately...

    200 gr 40 cal Hornady

Shot a deer with the .40 cal 200 XTP, doing 1900 fps ( chrono'd) and was very pleased. Nailed the shoulder ball at 12 yards. Blew it to bitty shards, got a rib and went through her chest like a blender. Didn't exit, and couldn't find it in the goo... All she did was retract the landing gear and...

    What are you Thinking Arkansas!!

I find it interesting how the same folk who think the rammer on my Firehawk is a tubular magazine, during our October muzzleloader antlerless and bear season, stare in wonder about me using a muzzleloader during rifle season. Oh! NOW it's a muzzleloader... No breechloaders in a MUZZLELOADER...

As Straight as I can Give it

Swiss Holy Black. 3f for me. Accurate, powerful, not terribly dirty ( for black) and amazingly consistent. No special primers or breechplugs necessary. No fuss. Switzerland. Hate the chocolate. LOVE the powder.

    Ruger Marlin 1894 .357

I have some 200 grain .35 caliber round nose Core Lokts that has lead oxidized white. Call 'em snowballs. They do a number on deer!

    Ruger Marlin 1894 .357

I found some OLD Hornady 158 gr soft points at Dixon's of all places! 600 to be exact. Don't know when they were made, but I have a 1973 Hornady manual that doesn't have them! I'm not a minimal caliber/ load kinda guy. I'm taking a critter's life and its all it has, so I want to be QUICK about...

    Ruger Marlin 1894 .357

SAAAWEET PIECE! Ruger got it right. Exceptional wood to metal fit, very fine machining/ polishing of all parts, and pretty slick right outta the box. Trigger needs work. Gotta be something... I put a 1.5x Burris on and with 158 gr Federal American Eagle soft points, she shoots! Likes a couple...

    Praise the LORD

Thank you all! He's a fine little man critter, with a lusty cry and a fearsome appetite. It's an amazing thing. Holding your baby's baby. I am blessed beyond all reason.

Grandson number 5! Born this day, 7lbs 2 oz 19 inches. Momma ( Baby Girl) and little Dalton are healthy and well. The LORD is GOOD! Gonna need more rifles...

    Spoilin' Boop

Ok! Did some work at 200 yards and I must say the new trigger has paid off! Three 3 shot groups, using a 200 gr FTX over 43 grains of LVR, chrono'd 2311 fps, were as follows: 1 & 15/16ths 1 & 15/16ths 2 & 1/4. Overlap of the groups could hardly have been better. This is about a 30%...

    Spoilin' Boop

Got the Timney for Boop. Super easy to install and the results are outstanding! Still has a touch of creep, but she's now a wonderful 3 pound pull! Very consistent and very controllable. Well worth the $. Gotta load up some rounds and see if the sub inch ( and several sub half inch) groups...

    Ummm... Did it AGAIN...

Chrono'd her today. With Federal A.E. 158 gr soft points, 1760 fps with a high/ low of 30 fps. Not too shabby! Gotta square up the crosshairs better though. Unless I'm really careful, she tosses shots to the right. She still groups around an inch for 3 at 50. Except this beauty! Rats on the...

    Ummm... Did it AGAIN...

Ooooh! Good one! But, with one exception, I don't give them human names. I don't do that with critters either. This little one is very addicting! .22 light, slick as can be, accurate and deer capable. Got my dies, primers and powder, Lil Gun and H110. Need to find me some 158 grain XTPs. Flat...

    Ummm... Did it AGAIN...

She is fun! The wood to metal fit is like it grew around the metal. There are slight gaps, as there should be, behind the tangs and the checkering is well done. The .357 Ruger Marlins haven't been out very long and aren't easy to find. This shop had a dozen .44s a couple months ago, and one...

    Ummm... Did it AGAIN...

My muzzleloader needs, being fully met in my current collection, I've dabbled in breechloaders. I just added a Ruger Marlin 1894 Classic in .357 Magnum. Gotta say, the quality of machining, fit and finish is superior to the original JMs I've seen and owned. Ruger REALLY got this right! I put a...

How to commit to a rifle

The .250-3000... Always wanted one, preferably a Savage Model 1920 with the Lyman bolt plug aperture sight. And 1-10 twist barrel... Reading Larry Kohler's " Shots at Whitetails " got me hooked on aperture sights and hungry for a .250.

    Spoilin' Boop

About the only thing about Boop, my Remington 760 (.35 Remington), I don't find myself too fond of is her trigger. It's not terrible, but it doesn't help either and there have been times when it was a distraction. Inconsistent and gritty. I decided to get a Timney spring and sear kit. The kit is...

How critical is the muzzle crown on a barrel used exclusively to fire saboted bullets?

A lesson from the dreaded T/C QLA. An off center QLA is death to conicals. Put a wad or a sub base under it and accuracy often dramatically improves. Sabot loads will shoot just fine however. My own experience bears this out. This is because the bullet has already exited the muzzle by the time...

1976. My first hunting license. And rifle.

I was bored. So I get a rough rag and some rubbing alcohol, dismounted the stock and removed the triggerguard, sling bases and buttplate. I then scrubbed the near 80 years of grunge off her. Then I start with b.l.o. Such lovely stuff! Smells good and makes your hands soft. The stock gulped it...

What muzzleloading stuff did you do today?

Gave my ladies their regular goings over. They like the attention. Calico reminded me that it's HER turn this year. Yes. Muzzleloaders are like women. Don't pay proper attention to them and they'll put the hex on ya! You have been warned...
