What material is thin enough?

Add a 0. .005 is thin.

While looking for linen material to try out for patches at our local JoAnnes I came across a few that the calipers showed were that thin.
Grab a c-mic or some calipers and head to your local JoAnnes, Hobby Lobby, etc. Make darn sure the material is 100% linen or cotton and I'd also look for as tight a weave as you can find.
