What and where do I get so I can check and see what my SML can safely use for the different powders that I have?

Encore Bergara 45/70 conversion. Savage II plug.right now shooting the light blue sabot and 200g sst.

I have shot the H4198 and N110. The N110 seems to destroy the sabots at 33-35g. I have N110 N120 N130 VihtaVouri

I have Accurate 5744 and 2015

I have Hodgdon H4198 H322

And Alliant Reloder 7.

I like the low recoil of the N110 but at 33g and 2225 fps and with the sabots melting it’s not gonna work. Had a suggestion on modmuzz that said a wool patch under the sabot I could actually bump up the N110 to 37g.

I was surprised that light of load was hard on sabots. Even 37 grains normally is not considered a heavy load. Any roughness in your barrel?

No roughness in this barrel
I have put a shot and sst with no powder and used primers you shoot it out and looked at sabot to see if there was any unusual deformities.

Reloader 7 is the most sabot friendly powder I have ever shot. Try around 62gr or a few gr more. H 4198 56gr with your bullet sabot combo should yield 2400fps+ and should be very effective on deer out to 200yds. or so.

I’ll try a 3 shot group with Reloader 7. And see what happens. Thank you

Could you ever have shot rapidly enough that the bore got warm and melted the sabot or left plastic build up in the bore? That could cause future shots with the sabots to have issues.

Typically Ive waited 10-15 minutes in hot weather. When it’s cool I can feel that it’s not warm enough and shoot it 6-8 minutes between shots

shot 55g of N120 and grouping significantly better than I had with H4198. sabots looked beautiful. Felt about the same recoil. Will shoot over a crony this week. I also will be trying the Reloader7 by the weekend D55.

58gr N120
63gr Reloder7

Not sure if i ever shot less than 58gr of the N120. I might have tried slightly less. Good load if you want some speed at a reasonable peak pressure.

Went lite since it’s my Encore Bergara barrel. I wanted to feel and see how it shot the 55g and go from there.

Here’s the N120 shots and sight in

top hole was from me not gripping forearm as good as I should have. Shot the next 2 above right and then adjusted and shot the lower 2 and a final adjustment for just above center and a hair left. Will shoot more this evening and see how good of a 3 shot group I can achieve

You will not break 34kpsi with 58gr and a 200gr bullet. 63gr of Re7 will be quite a bit less than that too(under 27kpsi). N120 likes a little bit more pressure. Go too low and you risk temp sensitivity. Loads you tested when its warm might lose more fps in the cold than you would like.

Noted! I’ll load it at 58 and see how she likes it.
Was going to hunt the Kentucky 2day early muzzleloader, but my nieces and nephews lost a cousin and we have a funeral Friday. I’ll have more time to fine tune and wait for the general gun season to open and head south. Thank you for the info

If you want to use less N120 consider getting one of the heavier Fury 40cals. He sells a 225gr, 240gr and a 250gr bonded jacket 40cal. IIRC they are .401-.402 but he can make them smaller if you contact him.

The Fury 40cal 250gr shot and performed well on deer when I used them @ 2450ish fps.

Guy Hill mentioned the 225 was a excellent choice. It’s not that I want to use less, just want a solid 100-300 yard gun

The load I shot for that speed was 56gr H4198 HLB with 40cal Fury 250gr lead tipped actual chrono speed was av 2465fps with a 25" Bergra/Apex barrel. 200gr TC shockwaves shot av 2430fps with same powder charge and near same poi at 100yds.

4198 actually is more efficient with the heavier bullet. I hear this often that fps is virtually the same as a 200gr so it has to be. Re7 would benefit also but its double based so its not as noticeable.

Shot 58g N120 tonight. Knurled the bullets

first 2 really close and the 3rd I pulled left a hair
I know it’s not as good as most of you guys. But I’m regaining confidence in this gun thanks to all of your help.
