I just added an Austin & Halleck .45 cal to my collection, shot it the first time yesterday with 90 gns BH 209 and got some blowback each time, not bad, but a nuisance for sure. The open breech design baffles me, why the heck not make that a little better. I understand why, some states don’t allow closed breech ignition and they tried to create a rifle that would work in as much of the country as possible (I’m guessing of course). I came up with this fix after looking at some other posts. Still need to drill a vent hole in it.
Anybody know where I might find one of the .32 cal adaptors that I saw Randy Wakeman posting about on another thread?, or if anyone else makes the 209 nipple portion still? All I could find was the whole adaptor with the hammer and all. The hole in my nipple is rather large it appears compared to the musket and #11 adaptors that came with the gun. I want to shoot BH out of it.

Its a plunger similar to the old Rem 700ML. PR bullet does sell a 209 plug for them but its still a plunger setup. No idea if Wakeman still offers plugs on his website but ive never seen a sealed 209 system for the A&H rifles.

BH209 is not recommended in that style ignition.

Checked with Wakeman, "discontinued long ago" was the reply. I believe it was your posts that showed the copper coupling being used as a anti blowback device that gave me the idea for mine

This is the fix I came up with for my Austin Halleck. I appreciate everyone’s input that I spoke with, and that replied to my post.

Shot the competed gun tonight for the second time, shot it last night for the first. Doesn’t care for the .45 cal SST’s or Powerbelts. It did, however, like the Parker 300 grain Ballistic Extreme’s. Thanks Bob for selling me only ten to tryout to see if they’ll shoot. Yeah, I guess they do. I only fired one 3 shot group. 100 yards, 90 grains BH209, pretty gusty winds, I’d guess 10-15 mph. I know I can tweak the charge and probably get better results, I am however, extremely pleased with what I’ve got so far. It’s a .45 cal gun with a measured 1/21 twist, I’m betting AH called it a 1/20, I can’t find that info online. Group is probably 1-1/8”. A bottle cap goes through the center of two holes and 1/4 of the way into the other one. Tomorrow, gonna order more Ballistic Extremes and dial it over to center bull, then maybe take a couple of 300 yard shots to see how she flies....
