So I read about 209 being the best substitute, how it's been discontinued, not discontinued, coming back this year blah, blah, blah.

So what is the real story? Hogdgon is supposed to be making it now but it is nowhere to be found yet but people on the forums are always asking questions about it as if they have plenty. Are these people just well stocked from before all this or are there sources for it, and real Black Powder that I'm not aware of?

Last mention of it is around February it would be available and now it seems no one is talking about it. Hogdgon, as far as I'm aware has not had a lot of trouble with production since all this started. Although stock is not always immediately available I have been able to find all the Hogdgon powders I use for smokeless reloading within a week for only slightly elevated prices. I'm curious what they have to do to start making it themselves, retool, setup? It's just another formula to them and can't be too much different than other substitutes they already make.

I'm totally new to all this so not ever using it I don't know if it's all that anyway, loose 777 has worked fine for me but I'm always looking for something better. I'm having good luck with 2 Windex w/vinegar patches followed by a dry patch flipped once, loading feels the same every time using sabots. By my crude calculations it would make my cost go from 22 cents to 45 cents per shot. This is assuming volumetric vs weight is similar to 777, so is it really all that?

People are finding BH209, just not everywhere. I found a whole stockpile of it and picked up 4 bottles, at a Wal-Mart. I know of two other Wal-Marts in MI that have a pile of BH209. All with the HODGDON label.
Those who didn't learn the first time find themselves hunting hard or, paying prices that make some scammer money.

New Hodgdon label.

It is here in stock in Kalifornia by me, about $42 a jug. I already have about 10 jugs so I haven't bought any more.
I haven't seen any 777 here for a bit though. I have some of that, some Pyro P some Pyro RS, and a bunch of White Hot pellets for my daughter to have fun with.

Curious, what is the category, search term or SKU# for that? Can you C&P a link? I was hoping I could ship to store here.

Since walmart doesn't sell ANY ammo or guns in CA now I think they are filtering everything on their website for me because it does not come up in a search.

I have BH 209 but no primers, which puts me in a different boat, LOL. Can't find any around my area. Nothing online either.
You could check places like midway usa, natchez shooting supply as source.

I picked up 2 bottles of Blackhorn at a Walmart just south of St. Louis. It is slowly starting to trickle in but as others have stated Primers are a different story

Just as an FYI for the OP, Blackhorn isn't like the other black powder substitutes in the way you clean it after use. You mentioned Windex, which is appropriate for Pyro, 777, the various pellets, et cetera. Blackhorn is more like a conventional smokeless when you go to clean up. Hoppes instead of Windex. You can reasonably expect to shoot a dozen or more times before you need to brush your bore when shooting at the range.
Also you didn't mention what you're considering burning it in. Blackhorn really, really likes an enclosed burn space, enclosed breech on one end, tight fitting projectile, with or without sabot, on the other. Some rifles, in their stock configurations, are better suited to it than others.
I know you said you haven't used it, yet. Just something to think about when/if you take that step off the deep end.

Most of you are VERY lucky not to live here in CA.

Walmart WAS the source for reasonably priced ammo and hunting, shooting stuff. But because of the PC idiots that run this state they got pressured in to not selling pistol and black rifle ammo, which led them to .22lr (long rifle), it's used in pistols ya know, so the long and short of it is they stopped all ammo/gun sales here.

Even though they are not legally bound by ANY law to stop selling they have gone to lengths far and beyond, like blocking the SKU for Blackhorn to me as to not offend the liberals in charge.

Just an FYI to all that you might think walmart is great and has what you need at good prices, understand that they do not support the 2nd amendment whatsoever and only sell 2A products when it doesn't affect their bottom line and PR. It's a shame that people in free states don't understand, because they aren't aware, of the implications (coming your way soon enough) of this nationwide and use their wallets to protest walmart and others (Dick's/Yeti) actions.

Ok, rant over. But really, how many mass shootings have been committed with a ML (no question mark, rhetorical).

I take all responsibility for not moving out of this liberal toilet decades ago.

Sorry, but the entire situation disgusts me.

As to the first part, I haven't cast my shadow in a wal-wart in a couple years now. I will go out of my way to get what I need rather than give them one dime. As to the second part: true about mass shootings. But I have to say it would be entertaining to watch a couple street gangs line up in ranks and volley fire at each other. As long as no innocents were harmed Id pay five bucks to watch that. Finally, I left that socialist paradise over 30 yrs ago and have not looked back. I didn't know Yeti was anti 2A and will have to look into it.

As long as it's not a Flintlock, you can't hold them sideways, can you?
