Brown Bore Butter patches ain't necessarily rust.
I was once given a .45 T/C Hawken that had been buttered like popcorn.
It patched CHOCOLATE.
The bore was a rolled mirror. The brown was simply oxidized Bore Butter.
I've used Bore Butter for years. It works when used with common sense. If your gonna use it as a preservative, that bore HAS TO BE DRY! Swab with rubbing alcohol, don't waste good sippin' likker, and dry patch. Let it sit a bit, then Butter it up. Otherwise you will trap moisture and cause rust.
I use SPG when lubing conicals. Not as runny as tube B.B.
