Can cleaning patches be lubed and used on round balls? If not how do I decide the thickness of the patch to use - or is it a trial and error game? I want to get some.490 round balls for my mountain rifle so I can shoot it, but I've no patches.

I DON’T advise cleaning patches, They are likely not Durable, and Vary in Thickness. You want Repeatability. Actual Muzzleloader Patches of Known thicknesses are Easy to get, and Plenty Cheap enough.

It is trial & Error, Due to variances in Bore Diameter. But a Good Rule of thumb is .018 Pillow Ticking with a .490 Ball. My advice is to Buy 2 different Thicknesses, .015 and .018 are the Most commonly used. They make Patches of All thicknesses, You can also Buy Bulk Material at places like Joannes Fabric, Even Walmart. If buying Bulk you need to Take your Dial calipers along so you can measure the Thickness

Some Bulk Material I recently purchased at JOANN Fabric. My Favorite is Pocket Dril

Like this, These are .018 Ticking Unlubed, So you can lube them with your own Lube

Alright. I didn't think so, but I wanted to confirm. It's the material at Joann labeled as "pillow ticking" or something else?

I can’t remember if it’s labeled or not? But just ask, and they will know exactly what you are Talking about :lewis: The Red Stripe stuff is .015, and the Blue Stripe is .018, The Red Stripe stuff that i bought was Soft, it felt like it had Been Washed, The Blue stripe was NOT, It was Stiff, I washed it. The Dark Brown material is Pocket Drill, The White is .020 or .022 Denim

Make sure that Whatever you get is 100% COTTON And NOT a Synthetic, Polyester, Etc. Material, You want 100% Cotton :lewis:

Most fabric has a sizing starch in it, it's best to wash in hot water with no soap to remove it. Hang to dry.
Put it in a nylon or if your wife has delicates bags use one of them, otherwise the ends will fray and unravel. Makes a heck of a mess and you lose a lot of material.

Can I shoot minie balls or REAL bullets out of the mountain rifle? (32" barrel, 1:66 twist)

Just looking ahead.

You can but I think they'll be too accurate. The barrel you have is for round balls.
My 54 cal GM 32 rebored 1-60 by Bob Hoyt from 50 cal kills deer with the Lee REAL ,furthest being ranged @ 112 yds and shoots nice groups on paper @190 yds . The conical sits on a felt wad over 80 grains of OE 3F and it still shoots a patched RB great but I do like the more consistent 2 hole leakage with conicals ,Lyman Great Plains being another

Purchased Hornady round balls and prelubed patches to get started. I eventually want to cast bullets but there's a learning curve.
