This is the last rifle to be cleaned that I purchased. I don't know how to remove the barrel, and there's definite rust in the bore and around the nipple, but I can still see rifling.

How do I get the barrel off?
What is the "unsafe to shoot" point for rust?
And least of all, what is it?

Some of those guns have a screw under the nose cap. You have to remove the screw and unscrew the tang. Then the barrel will lift off the stock. Other rifles have little pins along the stock. You'll have to tap them out .
The rust might just clean up with some Birchwood Casey rust remover and some 00 & 000 steel wool. You'll end up taking a lot of the bluing off too but that's not a problem. Those green scrubby pads can work inside the barrel. Cut them down to patch size to work with your cleaning rod.

I am not familiar with that Rifle Model? It sure is in SAD, ROUGH Shape. If it were mine, and i was serious about it, i would look in to a Replacement Barrel, And Drum/Nipple Assembly

I've been knocking down rust with 400grit and finishing with 2000 or steel wool.

I have used 4 ought or 0000 steel wool in the past to start with good results. You always can get more aggressive.

Finally got the gun disassembled. Didn't try the nipple after I stopped at the clean out screw. Stuck a toothpick in the nipple and filled the barrel with motor oil, then dropped it breech end down into a jar of oil. I'll try the nipple and such tonight and see about some scotch Brite patches down the bore

Ran a bore brush through it, then worked some 0000 steel wool on the jag like a patch. Scotch Brite wouldn't fit down the barrel over the jag. Finally got enough rust knocked down that I could run a patch. Patch was ripping to shreds 6" down initially.

Does anyone know if I can use evaporust to dissolve the rust in the bore? I'm sure it wouldn't be good for the bluing on the barrel if I'm not careful, but I think we're beyond being the prettiest gun in the safe at this point.

Fwiw, I ended up with a bad .50 cal (TC) barrel myself a few months ago, and after 400 or so strokes down the barrel I gave up. So I sent my barrel off to Bobby Hoyt and now it's a brand new 54. Just a little thought, if yours doesn't work out. Anyway good luck.

How much did that cost?

Might be worth it on a $20 gun.
Well good news and bad news. Good news is I think the rust is removed. Bad news is I think it'll get converted to a 54cal.

Carefully soaked in evaporust for 8 hours yesterday and then cleaned it. Had to run a brush and use the loose jag because I think the pitting is too great down at the bottom of the bore to be feasible. First patch I ran about got stuck at the bottom. After running a brush and other patches with the loose jag I finally ran the tight jag again. Ran patches until they were clean with Murphys soap and water, then scalding water, two dry patches(clean), let it sit to finish drying. Then ran patch with bore butter down the tube -no rust on the patch, but still the hanging and resistant down at the bottom.

Does this sound like I have pitting low in the barrel? It is smooth running a patch near the muzzle, but is rough getting back up.
