Spent the day in the mountains prowling a small stream with my Tenkara rod and a small box of flies. Had a blast landing some beautiful trout. Catch and release.

I love fishing for cutthroats. In high mountain lakes, they stay near the shore, so it is perfect for a Tenkara rod. I bought my 10' rod on eBay, and it was inexpensive and works great. For trout fishing, there isn't any more fun way to catch them. So easy, an 8 year old could do it. Perfect for backpacking too, since it only weighs 4 oz.

Tom drove over to Missoula from Helena and picked me up after work Friday. Drove up to the Trailhead at Goat Creek, and walked/climbed up to the divide, and down the other side. We could still see till about 11:00 pm, which is when we bedded. After spending the night with mosquitos, in the morning we continued down and found the drainage coming out of Sunburst Lake. We walked up the drainage, and came to the lake about noon.

We could see them cutts, but they wouldn't take the spoons, nor spinners. They were some beautiful fish. We felt like we we going to get skunked. We recalled there were some Shad Darts in the pack and had to give them a try. Wow, wow a couple of real nice cutts bit, maybe 17", maybe not. Maybe 48 years ago now. Wrapped them fish in tin foil, and tossed them into the fire. Yes, yes they were good, really.

We only spent 2 hours or so, at the lake, then headed down the trail, then up the trail. Camped in the saddle at the top on the Divide. Must have been tired; don't recall a minute of the night. Sunday noon, the family came to the trail head, and took me home. Tom didn't have to detour; was able to go straight home. The Cutthroat were beautiful, and it seemed so perfect.

Tom is gone now, but still exists in memory; still missed. Tom still makes me smile, but the eyes might get damp.

Here are a couple from a different trip last summer. Washington State.
