I have a NEI 50045PP bullet mold in there's not a lot I can find about the mold. I know the were a paper patch bullet design for trap door style 45-70 rifles I believe but that's no my intended use for this mold.

I'm currently having an old Cabela's Hawken relined to a .45 caliber (.457" bore dia) 1:18 ROT. I'm planning on using this NEI mold for paper patching.

What's different about the NEI 50045PP mold is that the shank of the bullet is lightly rigid with a diameter of .446" and the nose of the bullet has a diameter of .458". Have anyone had experience with this mold?

What I'm considering is patching the bullet up to .458" and sizing it to .456", I'm wondering if it's was meant to be patched at the shank anyone because if so the nose would crimp the patching when sizing. I'll take pictures if needed.

The numbers you give Don’t make sense for a Muzzleloader? Typical .45 Cal bore/groove diameters are .450/.458, When Paper Patching for a Muzzleloader you Patch to Bore Diameter (.450) and Groove diameter for Cartridge guns (.458)

I see now where you say .457 Bore Diameter, Are you absolutely SURE on that? That should be the Groove Diameter

My rifle is being relined by Bobby Hoyt, I told him I wanted it to be able to use 45-70 cast bullets that I planned on shooting at bore (.457") or .001 over bore at .458 as well as PP them .001 under bore sized down to .456"

I have a .456" sizing die I really never use so I figured I'd get some use out if it this way as well

I have NEVER heard of a .457 Bore Diameter Muzzleloader? I‘ll bet your Bore diameter ends up being .450, .451 and your Groove Diameter .457, .458 (in this case you need your finished Paper Patched Bullet to be .449-.450)

.45-70 Bores are also .450 Bore/.458 Groove

.45-70 Cast Bullets typically drop at .457-.458 Diameter from the Mold, and are typically Shot at Groove Diameter (.457-.458)

Muzzleloaders have the same .450 bore, .458 Groove But with a Muzzleloader you obviously shoot Bore Diameter (.450)

You would need a BIG hammer to load a .457-.458 Diameter Bullet down a Typical .450-.451 Muzzleloader Bore :)

Hoyt makes his .45 caliber barrel liners at .449 -.4495 I believe he said. What he's doing is reaming the I.D. of the liner it's self.

Which would leave a Bore Diameter (Land to Land) of around .450 :) Unless you are Having a 1 off Custom of sorts made, You will end up with a Bore diameter of .450-.451 and Groove will be .457-.458, That is what EVERY .45-70 Made is

I am having it custom made, it will be reamed to .457" then rifled. Instead of rifling the liner at .4495" he's reaming the liners inner diameter out before rifling it.

In this case (.457 Bore Diameter) a .456 FINISHED Patched Bullet would be ideal

Is this your Bullet?

Yes that's the bullet, I have a few different cotton papers I believe 35lb paper, 50lb paper and one that says 60lb paper but it is not. I have some #9 onion skin. So .002 - .004 I'd say off the top of my head. I'm going to try a couple papers out so I know what size to make the Temple based on how they patch. I also have a folder of cotton paper(s) given to me I have to look through. I accidentally bid on this mold and didn't know and I won

There's vids on youtube about paper patching. Any chance that Idaholewis did one for beginners that's still around?
