We're just blowing smoke so I'll share this with you guys, you'll have to laugh at my screw up.

SUBJECT: Here's one that I passed on .....

I know, "what's wrong with you???" This guy was so amazing and still hanging around after me bouncing a ramrod off his one horn. The year before 1990, "1989 Muzzle Loading Season - Colorado", this guy shows up at my place. Probably chased out of Estes Park (Roosevelt National Park). That's where the good mule deer hide during hunting season.

We are hunting on the back side of our 300 acres next to the neighbors 10,000 acres (all private) and this guy pops up (he's so big I though he was closer than he was). My friends I always hunt together here, they are watching to see what happens from a distance. I peek around a large moss rock and there he is. I put the sights on his neck (easy shot). Boy was that a wrong thing to think. !@#$%^ I'm using my favorite GRRW Leman Trade Rifle (.58 cal. that really groups). I touch one off and you guessed it he's further away than I thought - see the round hit the ground in front of him.

I'm on a slope going down hill, my friends are yelling at me to reload which I'm doing. They are yelling "he's coming straight at you" crap I'm loading as fast as I can. Pull the rifle to my shoulder and there he is - in my face, scared the you know what out of me, probably him too. I am shaking now, put the sights on his nose and fire. About get knocked on my butt as the ramrod fly's out the muzzle and bounces off this guys horn. He's gone in a second and I'm shocked that I did such a dumb thing as shooting my ramrod at him. My friends are rolling around on the ground, crying with laughter. !~@#$%^ The rest of the season I was the joke they were talking about.

 And that’s a Buck of a LIFETIME to Boot!! Is that the actual Deer this happened with?

That's him, he hung around for three seasons then moved on ??? Lived on the backside of our place (private) no one knew he was there. He would come out at dark to eat hay and get a drink and of course have a lick on the salt blocks. The salt blocks are probably what kept him around.....

That is a TRUE Trophy Class Mule Deer Buck!

I love to deer hunt, it is my favorite of all hunting. I am just as much about their Conservation. As i get Older, I’m also getting softer. I can pass on a Pretty darn nice Buck these days and Feel good about it. I get more enjoyment being out and getting to see them interact, react with one another as i do Shooting one. It’s AMAZING the Hardships these Animals go through

A great story, entertaining. Funny in some ways but a little heart breaker also. Years ago I went to Wyoming with a Group out of Flint called the Flint Front Loaders. We kinda did the old style setup with trappers tents, cast pots and pans, all that stuff. I practiced with my RB muzzle loader (top gun in avatar) and was good to 120 yards. The third day there I saw the biggest buck of my life. 500 yards away. The only reason I saw him was the sun on his huge antlers. It was early in the afternoon so I just enjoyed. As the afternoon went on he would show up occasionally through the trees. Getting closer. Half hour before dark he showed up at 120 yards. I didn't have a great shot but sure wanted to take it. I passed. I remember that deer more than any other. Sure we all had this happen some how.

I cut myself short here fella’s, I said my 100 yard Group here would come in just OVER 1” inch, That was a Quick tape measure look. I started to Cover this Bull up with another one so i can Shoot it again (I recycle LOTS of Targets) I thought what the Heck, i would get a more precise measurement, My 3 Shots measure 1.4” outside edge to outside edge, Then you Subtract The Bullet Diameter, which in this Case is .492, This makes my 3 Shot Group 0.908, So it was slightly UNDER 1” Inch :lewis: Not that it really Matters, But at least now i Know for Sure
