I ordered a nipple wrench for my new 1858. I want to pull the nipples and clean everything well, then make sure I have anti-sieze on them before I shoot it.

I ordered a wrench that is made for revolvers and got it tonight. I think the thing is made of pewter! It is tearing and bending, but won't even budge the nipples. Mind you, this is a brand new, out of the box revolver that has not been fired yet.

Can any of you more experienced folks recommend anything? Maybe a high quality wrench?

I'm excited to shoot it as it's my first black powder pistol. But not gonna do it til I can make sure I can clean and service it properly.

I feel your pain… I bought an 1860 Army repro, knowing that it had seized nipples. Good thing I like a project!

Destroyed a BUNCH of mass-market trash nipple wrenches from Traditions, CVA, and the like. Your “pewter” analogy was right on the mark!

You definitely don’t want to do what I did, to your new revolver. 😎

Some higher quality nipple wrenches are available. No specific order, and no endorsements here. Some are Made in USA, and should be better than the crap at Wal Mart, etc.

I didn’t care much for Ted Cash’s ratcheting nipple wrench. He usually makes top-notch stuff, so I was surprised.

Lots of other stuff out there, but that should get you started, anyway.

Happy shopping!

Much appreciated! Will all of these fit my Pietta?

I actually ended up going with a ratchet style from Cabellas. It was plenty strong enough to break them loose, and had a perfect fit so they didn't damage the cylinder or the nipples.

I’m glad to hear of your success- way to go!

When you’re done shooting, be sure to pull the nipples, cleaning them and the cylinder thoroughly.

Put something on the dried) nipple threads, before reassembly. There are a number of commercial anti-seize type products that are marketed for this purpose.

Many shooters have a preference for one product over another. Probably any of them are better than nothing. Eventually you’ll likely develop a personal preference.

The nipples should be snug, but they DON’T have to be cranked in as tightly as you can….

All my BP guns get cleaned after use. I have a tube of Traditions breech plug lube I use on the nipples for all my guns after cleaning. I use a sonic jewelry cleaner for the nipples. Put them in there while I clean the rest of the gun. Then a quick wipe at the end.
