So I was at my neighborhood Dunham's today and as always I looked into the gun section I should stop doing that I really should stop doing that.

I saw something behind the glass case that caught my eye it was a price tag for $199 attached to the price tag was a 12 gauge pump action shotgun.

I asked the gentleman at the counter if I could take a look thinking well for 199 maybe. He handed it to me and then I noticed it was a Hatsan it was at that moment that I may be turned into a definite yes.

so here shortly we'll be welcoming the new member to the family the Hatsan 12 gauge escort shotgun.

In finalizing my purchase I asked the retailer can I use this box of 12 gauge ammo for turkeys and ducks to which he replied yes.

Okay great I thought 799 for 25 rounds that's beautiful. Until I got home and I realize that this is number eight shot. Now I know that it's not ideal for ducks or turkey but is there a possibility that I could use it on rabbits and squirrels? Most importantly is it legal?

Anybody have any comments about shot size or the Hatsan brand of shotguns please post down below and let me know. Thanks guys.

Half Cocked,
I think I only live abut 30 miles or so from you in Michigan.

If that's number 8 steel you can use it for both ducks and turkey. Hardly an ideal choice (IMHO) for either but could be done. Your choke would determine what distance it would be effective. Have to shoot some cardboard in the back yard to determine that. Would be a good choice for partridge or woodcock.

If its lead you cannot use it for ducks or waterfowl. Again you could us it for turkey but not really an ideal choice (IMHO). If your shots are close or you have a tight choke it would work.

Thank you. Makes sense lead is no good for the water.

The stuff I bought is marketed for shooting clays. I think I am going to use it for it's intended use. It'll give me a chance to familiarize myself with the firearm.

The barrel is not choked. I am going to pick up some steel shot 4 or the like for water foul. At least they're still some variety of shot gun ammo out there.

I have the #4 steel you are considering. If you cant find shells let me know and Ill give you some. I have a considerable supply. Like to see you be able to enjoy your new toy.

Thanks man that's really nice of you I'll let you know.

#8 lead shot can be used for rabbit and squirrels but wouldn't be my first choice (6's)...they're better suited for small game birds like quail of woodcock and of course clay targets. Now to this shotgun... assuming it's a Hatsan Field Hunter that gun has choke tubes. It's made in Turkey but as far as quality I have no idea. At least it's not Chinese...

No choke tube in this one it's full bore. Hatsan air rifles are excellent I own 4 of those. First shot gun though.

If that's the case, it won't be any good for ducks or turkeys. A short barrel gun like that is more suited for slugs. Good for deer.
If you can get interchangeable barrels, it could be multifunctional. You'd need a 24 or 28 inch barrel and different choke tubes.
A short barrel will spread the shot string too wide, too fast to hit anything beyond 15 or 20 yards.

I see. I should have done more research. But it was only $179. So I did buy some number six shot it's lead. Would I be good at 15 yd for squirrel and rabbit?Screenshot_20201112-192634.png

Great home defense gun with some 00 or #4 buck. If you decide you dont want it Im sure you can sell it to get your money back.

Yes it would be good for rabbit and squirrel. Just lot a long range gun.

Nice probably easier than the sig p320. Just have to wait for ammo. I saw these copper slugs that expand to a huge pin wheel. Dual purpose hunt and defend.

00 is gone unless Williams has some were getting close to hunt season.
