Tempting

I was unable to resist the temptation. I talked to the seller after the purchase and he told me it was never fired and there was still blueing in the barrel, after receiving it I agree. Seller thought this was made before they added serial numbers but I believe the 1151 before the patent number is the serial number. Has a gold colored Timney trigger, the lug to attach stock is dove tailed into barrel, rear sight folds down.

Very thin barrel, only . 820 at muzzle, another 54 barrel I have #3204 is .860. A tight patch in barrel makes a 3/4 turn in 21" of travel which would make this a 1 -28" barrel. Not a lot of info available on these older knights, Tony Bridges states his # 37 was 1-48" then he had one in the low 300s with 1-32" and that knight switched to 1 -28" shortly after that.

Not sure if I can bring myself to shooting a 30+ year classic that's never been fired, time will tell.

Found some other markings.

C-28 inscribed on bottom of barrel, probably something to do with who made barrel.

51 on hammer assembly - no clue, not seen this on others.

I have another Pre Green Mountain MK 85 and the rubber butt has Knight Rifle on it. This one shows MK 85.

Apparently Knight was using laminated stocks early on.

Nice! I have two that have the recoil lug dovetailed into the receiver but neither of them are as early models as yours is. Thanks for posting the pics, that gold trigger is kind of intriguing.

I have a total of 4 of these older MK 85 barrels and looking them over i found that all of them have the underlug dove tailed into the barrel. 1 was brazed after installed and 2 were welded, this earliest one was left alone.

Nice! And for what it is, I think it was a very fair price. That color laminate and blue go together so nicely. Same combo of the one I gave my dad a few years back. Good find and yes, some of that is intriguing. Definitely an early bird :yeah:

From what I've read Knight used at least 3 different barrel makers before settling on Green Mountain, Any of you know how or if these other manufacturers marked their barrels ?

I tried to understand this as well, and found it to be confusing at best for me. Numrich kept popping up as a barrel supply, along with Green Mountain, a good friend of mine has a Newer Stainless MK-85 .54 Cal that i would bet has a Numrich barrel, it doesn’t have any maker marks on it? If it were a Green Mountain Barrel it should have the GM Mountain Logo.

I would be more interested in the Twist Rate, and HOPE that it’s NOT the 1:48, me personally anyway. If you plan to collect it, and not shoot it, It wouldn’t matter what the Rate of Twist is

Lewis, it's a 1-28 twist.

Scroll up to where I first posted and you will see what info I was able to find on internet.

Toby Bridges seemed to had a relationship with Tony Knight from the beginning of production and his articles is where I got most of my information but even he doesn't cover everything so I was hoping to fill the blanks by others who may know.
