Ok guys, this summer I embarked on a mission to build my own .410 (since I couldn't find one to buy.
The build started with a inexpensive Whitetail .504 bought in East Tn.
Doc supplied a
410 barrel, 1 in 16 twist stainless, (the last one he had, standing in a corner of his shop, according to him.)
Preston Vanderford at Ironhorse Gunworks in Loretto Tn. agreed to do the work.
Barrel turned to original dimensions, cut to 23", 11 degree target crown, threaded for action and breech plug, drilled and tapped for front sight, welded a new heavy lug at the rear of the action, drilled and tapped for a rear action screw in place of the rear trigger guard screw, (like a Model 97) ,welded on 2 ramrod thimbles, glass bedded the action and recoil lugs.
He finished the rifle by cerakoting all the metal in a brushed tungsten color (even though it was stainless, the cerakote will give added corrosion resistance) and dipped the stock in Krytek Typhon camo.
On the barrel he laser etched "White Muzzleloading System/Ironhorse Gunworks" .410 cal. Black powder only.
I've mounted a Nikon 4 x 12 Buckmaster scope for testing.
I will be testing a Accurate custom molded conical bullet modified from idaholewis "i" bullet design by adding one driving band and one groove. It comes out of the mold at .410 and 335 grains.
Now for pictures...

Great Job Rick!! That is one awesome-looking rifle! Doc would be proud and I’m sure he is smiling down from Heaven. We can’t wait to see your range report. The finish on the bbl goes perfectly with the stock! :lewis:

So, a small update. Was able to test fie the .410 yesterday. A hurried trip that included fading light, a makeshift shooting platform, (tailgate), and powder that was clumpy and suspect
It took 3-4 shots to walk to center target.
2 upper holes were from 60 gr. T7, 3f
2 lower holes were shot with 70 gr.
Range was 75 yards.
1/2" @75 is promising....

And to sweeten the deal, my smith had a old Whitetail he no longer used. In .451.....
It was missing the sights and a ramrod.
It followed me home after some horse trading. The Simmons mounted on it was junk. Trashed it. Was able to salvage the bases and mounts. Cleaned up nice.

Its a sickness, I tell ya, a sickness.

Now I gotta decide whether to find a original front sight, (I have a couple of rears), buy the new Williams front globe with the small fiber optic dot and pair it with the Lyman 57 in the safe, or buy a decent set of mounts and put the 3 x 9 Nikon on it.

And if I want my wife to know that is a different rifle in the safe, I'LL TELL HER! 🤣🤣

Had a small problem with newly built .410; the action screw in the newly added rear lug was too short. Only 2-3 threads engagement. Stripped out. Fixed that myself, and went back to the range.

110 measured yards:The 5 shot group 75 grains T7, 3F, (measures about 1 3/8, with a called flier on the far left. Knew it when the trigger broke.

The next target shows 2 groups. The group on the right is 3 shots in about 5/8". Look close and you will see two in the same hole on the right. 60 grains T7, 3F.

The group on the left is only two shots, 65 grains.
About 3/4"

And finally, my recently acquired .451 Whitetail.
3 shot group, 1 inch. 70 grs T7, 3F.

These old Whites will shoot better than I can hold.
