I think my hottest planned loads on my 45cal are as follows:

11/59grains of N110/H322 on 275gr Fury smooth sized. I’ll try that load on sabot 250gr Fury too.

58grains of IMR4198 on 275gr Fury smooth sized & sabot 250gr Fury.

62grains of Reloader7 on 275gr Fury smooth sized & sabot 250gr Fury.

I also plan similar loads on similar and on smaller bullets of different brands.

Do you think these loads are too hot, and would they benefit from using wads?
I have always had to use a wad with smooth sized (Fury) bullets. (wool)

I heard that the imr 4198 is very temperature sensitive in cold weather from a couple of different people..
I heard that from Mark Woodman. He recommended the Reloader7 for cold weather.
Based on very old posts and traces I saw on Doug’s board I’ll try duplex load 11/59 N110/H322 for up to 275grain projectiles. But it’s a bummer that many of the experts from that board have passed away.
I’ll probably also experiment with another duplex of 10/55 N110/IMR4198 for up to 250 grain projectiles - because I have a lot of IMR4198 on hand.
Please note that I will of course work up from loads a bit less than quoted above.

mmmm lot of rehash and hash LOL LOL i have owned since 2003
my ruger no. 1 .45 cal 1:28 twist 28" long. sweet powder for it with lubed wonder wad blue sabot and .40 hornady 200gr sst. load - 73grs aa 2015 and or h322 both have same outcome avg 2900 fps .75" accuracy at 100 yds.
i have taken whitetail to 295 lazered yards. oh some one ask about heavy bullets?????
have fired many .458 600gr bullets over top of 108grns of h4831 !!! nothing on this planet is safe.
as should be done work up these loads slowly in your rifle

IIRC 58gr of N120 and a 200gr breaks 2700fps. Never had any problems with it but some say its temp sensitive too. 60gr will break 2800fps and right around 34kpsi.

Be VERY careful with N110 sabotless. It peaks fast but can be done if you keep the loads mild.

Here is a 225gr load and its already over 40kpsi.

Go up to a 275gr but down 12gr of powder and its still nearly 40kpsi.

I think you will want to be more in the 32-35gr range with a 250gr and see what kind of fps you are getting. My guess is you will be beating BH209 loads and have flawless ignition but im not 100% sure of the pressure.

Its not all that bad but yes if you sight in at 60F or more and hunt in 30F you will want to verify your load again before hunting. Realize also if you go up in bullet weight it will be less sensitive too. Bullets like the 240gr Fury with Re7 and 4198 should be really good. Ive seen guys shoot a 200gr then shoot a 240gr and got as good or better fps with the 240gr. That tells you right there you are getting a more efficient load burn.

Thank you!!!
That surprised me because I thought N110 was extremely hot. I bought it myself to use as a booster for duplex loads.
I originally bought the 5744 for this purpose but some of the traces I saw made me think it might exceed my 45kpsi limit.

I was told that H4198 is less temperature sensitive than IMR4198. Sadly I hadn’t been able to find any H4198 so I cannot find that out for myself.

Where can i find pressure traces for .45 cal. Loads using different powders, shooting bullet to bore. This gives us more combinations to try because you cannot get the powders you want.

I have a lot of different bullets to try:

Pittman Aeromax 0.452” 303grain aluminum tip
Speer Jacketed Handgun Bullet 0.451” 300grain soft point
Pittman Accumax 0.452” 278grain aluminum tip
Parker Black Max 0.451” 275grain black tip
Fury Star Tip 2p 0.452” 275grain black tip
Northern Precision Pinpoints 0.452” 270grain
Fury Star Tip 2p 0.452” 250grain black tip
Fury Star Tip MZ 0.402” 250grain open tip
Hornady FTX 0.452” 250grain flex tip
Hornady Interlock 0.452” 245grain soft point
Bear Creek 450 Bushmaster 0.452” 240grain soft point
Fury Star Tip 2p 0.402” 225grain black tip
Hammer Pittman-Hammer 0.408” 253grain
Hammer Shockhammer pure copper 0.452” 221grain open tip
Hornady SST 0.400” 200grain red tip
Woodman Arms pure copper 0.402” 175grain open tip
Hornady XTP 0.400” 180grain

P.S. - I had to inventory everything I bought for this new gun over last 6 months
You have a lot of bench time ahead of you- clear the calendar and of course let the barrel cool down between shots. Please report back with your findings. I use/have used some of the bullets on your list in .50 caliber and the the Furys and Parkers performed best in regard to accuracy, but Parkers have not fared well for me on deer (jacket separation on two shots and the bullets didn't mushroom well). Looking to see how the Furys open up on deer next season. I'm thinking the Furys will give my all-time favorite bullet (300gr Barnes Original Spitzer) a run for its money. I will also be switching from the use of sabots to bullet to bore when my new smokeless build arrives.

There is also a difference in pressure between ignition systems, ie 209, HIS, ASG, DI. About 5kpsi between 209 and DI. always start a bit low and work up, a ladder test will put you on a node in which to finess your load. There are other powders than listed in TGinPA traces that people are using provided you have a barrel profile that will handle it.

Thank you D55. I was not familiar with effects of different ignition systems. My new Woodman Patriot 45cal muzzleloader with 1-20 Brux barrel is a lighter hunting rifle that uses 209 ignition. Maximum pressure for it is 45kpsi
