This rifle in these pictures belongs to a friend of mine, he got it from a friend that sadly passed away recently. I was told that the rifle was used in the civil war and was passed down for generations in the man’s family. It’s either going to be sold or given away but we don’t even know what kind of rifle it is. Anybody know?

Thanks,
Alex

Yes, it probably is old enough to be made during/prior to the CW, but so were many 1000's.
Looks to be a run of the mill (hardware) gun. Unless you find a name, marking to ID it to someone/something - with the broken stock, it really only worth the parts.. If the bore is good, it might be worth a little bit.
If it was for sale in commercial row at Friendship in that condition - $100-$200 IMO.

Never seen that type as military issue. Military CW era issue had full stocks, steel ramrods and attachments for slings and were "musket cap" ignition. The back lock is different also. Really looks like a smoothbore not a rifle. It may be a "put together" made out of CW gun parts and whatever available in an era of hard times for much of the country. Yeah, value 1C as a wallhanger or parts gun would be optimistic. Reflects my opinion and experience, others will be different. W
