I might have an opportunity to hunt an Aussie water buffalo up north next year and would want to take my muzzy. Would the hornady 300fn FPBs behind a 150gn charge be enough for penetration and damage or should I try something else? Baring in mind my options will be fairly limited.
Cheers
Jack

Re: Dangerous game projectiles

I would think that the 300 grain FPB would be about equal to a 300 grain SST with a sabot. When I think of dangerous game here is what I think of: http://www.vanceoutdoors.com/products2.cfm/ID/55481 If they won't ship to you try googling the bullet description and see if you can find a supplier who will. Just an afterthought, the T/C 400 grain bullets are so expensive if you have to sight them in you might want to get some cheap 400 grain .458 bullets W/sabot to get you started with sighting in. Let me know what you go with.

Those Thompson Centers are pretty expensive, I sent Hornady an e-mail asking them if they could recommend a bullet that would fit your needs, give me a day or so for them to get back with me and I'll post their reply. You might be able to buy a box of 50 bullets and a package of sabots cheaper than sighting in for T/C dangerous game.

Re: Dangerous game projectiles

You could get 325 hard cast 45 cal bullet without the gas check from grizzly ammo . You would have to buy some sabot for the bullets . I would shoot 300 sst and don't look back with 100 grains of powder .

If Hornady provides you with a dangerous game muzzleloading bullet, please post it.

The SST or any similar bullet would be about the poorest choice IMO. You need a deep penetrating bullet and one that holds together. That T/C bullet would do that. A heavy Barnes would do that. SST or the like? I would never bet my life on it.

Re: Dangerous game projectiles

Great info thanks guys and thank you d.windsor for throwing out that email really appreciate it.
That tc bone cruncher does look mean! Again it's all a question of getting them here. I've got to pop into the cop station in the next week and have a chat about importing non commercial rounds

Re: Dangerous game projectiles

Harvester Hardcast or Barnes Buster Bullet. Both will penetrate very well. Lehigh also makes a 300gr 458SOCOM that would be very nasty but tissue displacement would be poor compared to a bullet with a large metplat.

Hardcasts https://www.harvestermuzzleloading.com/ ... 1&Itemid=3

Barnes Buster bullets http://www.barnesbullets.com/products/c ... 2-bullets/

The Lehighs sure are fun to shoot though :D

Re: Dangerous game projectiles

for your situation where hardly anything is available, get a mold for something and cast your own. You can smelt your lead into different hardness ingots, and cast for anything you may want to shoot. then just buy bulk sabots- Im headed that way more and more

Re: Dangerous game projectiles

There a lot of big dangerous game that's been killed way before copper bullet solids and hard cast bullets came out . Just something to think about .

Re: Dangerous game projectiles

How about a 460 grain No Excuse?

Will the authorities have a problem with a lubed hunk of lead? I would sure think they'd get the job done.

If you're worried about the TC shooting them you could use the sub bases Sabotloader and other have been testing.

While you have time you might want to contact T/C and ask them what is the largest grain bullet your triumph will shoot, also the maximum powder charge of Black MZ behind that bullet, I think that is what you have. My Accura V2 will shoot up to a 400 grain bullet, I don't even remember where I heard that. As soon as I hear from Hornady I will let you know. I also sent harvester and Barns an e-mail.

Re: Dangerous game projectiles

This is a 540 gr paper patch bullet I shoot . I would be willing to bet it would do the trick .

Casting your own would definitely be the way to go if you can't find what you need through a local or online store .

Re: Dangerous game projectiles

Harvester Muzzleloading Bullets and Sabots http://www.harvestermuzzleloading.com/ We would recommend our 400gr Hard cast bullet and our black CR sabot. This combo has taken a Cape buffalo in Africa. As for the powder charge, we would recommend starting with 110 grains.

hard cast bullet: 400HC $14.95 for 50 http://www.harvestermuzzleloading.com/i ... t&Itemid=3

Sabot: H15045BR $7.99 for 50 http://www.harvestermuzzleloading.com/i ... t&Itemid=3

Hope this helps if you have any questions give Alan Hensley a call at 800-922-6287 or e-mail him at: [email protected]
If the H150BR Loads too easy in your gun with a .451 bullet, Use a H25045SRR sabot. My T/C Pro Hunter using a .451 bullet and a H15045BR sabot was entirely too loose, I used the H250 sabot and it worked great in my T/C. You might want to e-mail Alan Hensley and ask him if that would be ok.

If you decide to go with this set up if Alan says the H25045SRR would be ok, for the money and time to get stuff I would order both sabots. Just my Opinion, hope this helps. Harvester is a great company and responds fast to your needs, I still have 3 or 4 companies that have to get back with me. They will probably be a day or so, they don't respond like harvester.

Re: Dangerous game projectiles

Here is Hornady's Reply: We have had several customers use muzzle loaders to take the Asian Water Buffalo with complete satisfaction. I would suggest the 250 grain MonoFlex ML bullet which is a very tough monolithic metal bullet designed specifically for these types of animals. These rounds come in a 10 pack item # 67269 or a 20 pack item # 67274 and will be available from any Hornady dealer.

here is the box of 10: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/274283 ... uctFinding

here is the box of 20: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/413974 ... uctFinding

Re: Dangerous game projectiles

Here is speers reply: David: look at the 300 gr 454 Casull bullet # 3974, we drove it to 1784 fps in the 460 S&W. “Possibly” the 400 gr 0.475” bullet # 3976, finding a sabot could be tough.

you can look at the bullets here: http://www.speer-bullets.com/products/h ... pcurl.aspx

You can find sabots here: http://www.harvestermuzzleloading.com/ Look under Sabots, #3976 .475 dia = is Harvester sabot H50475B / #3974 .452 Dia = is harvester H15045BR / H25045SRR

The H25045SRR is listed because I don't know how the H15045BR will fit your gun. It is just a suggestion.

Here is another brand of sabots, they have free shipping, but they do not have the sizes of diameters needed here, this is just for your information: http://mmpsabots.com/store/mmp-standard-sabots/

Re: Dangerous game projectiles

500 grain Nosler Solids...100 to 120 grains of powder.

Re: Dangerous game projectiles

Thanks guys especially that extra work d.windsor thank you! My only issue will be whether they will ship them to australia. My best bet would be hornady as that's what I have already but I'll definitley check into it.

Re: Dangerous game projectiles

I know you said you are going with Hornady, Barns just got back with me and I will post the information for others. By the way the maximum Bullet weight you can shoot in your gun is 400 grain, Max Charge is 150 grains of powder.

here is Barns Reply: I’d look to our .451 cal 325gr Buster and incorporate it into the corresponding sabot – a MMP HPH24 or whatever .451 cal sabots you have available there. The charge should range from 100gr to 150gr depending on accuracy in his particular rifle.
