That really is a nice looking animal. I so happy the rifle rose to the occasion for you. It is really nice when a plan comes together!!!
Not absolutely sure of the exact penetration because we skinned and quartered him using the gutless method. All's I can tell you is they penetrated enough to make his insides fill up with blood and cause him to expire.208 yards, great shooting!
What kind of penetration did you get at that range? [fatal shots]
It is 1-28'' twist. It is an aftermarket barrel made by Green Mountain Barrels.Absolutely awesome story with a great ending. My father had a custom side lock made 40 years ago that hadn't fired a shot until last year when I took a doe with it. Now that I have read your story I want to take it on a real adventure. What is the twist rate on your barrel?
I would have to check the name on the barrel, but I know it is a 1:48 twist, .54. My most accurate load is 80grs of triple seven with a patch and ball. Have tried many different variations, but the patch and ball shoots best with that barrel, which means I wouldn't take a shot beyond 100yrds.It is 1-28'' twist. Great bull elk for sure. Congratulations. Give us the whole story when you can.Got lucky on the fifth day of my Colorado muzzleloader hunt. Could not be happier.
Was finally able to full fill a dream of taking a nice bull with one of my sidelocks.
