Here are photos of a pure lead bullet (recovered) out of an original Whitworth match rifle. Obviously the nose is slightly distorted from impact at 1000, but it's nearly perfect.
Note the bullet upset completely to the ojive.
Also, this round swaged PP bullet shoots as well if not better than a Hex swaged PP fitting bullet.

I don't have an original but I have a Birmingham PH repro and the Euro Arms Italian repro. Conical grease groove bullets make hexagon holes in the target paper.
 
Yes, the Hex holes in paper are quite fascinating..
Note the base on this PP bullet. I was actually an accident in the making of the swage plug with such a thin skirt - no one thought it would shoot as everyone thought it would blow out. It didn't and is a great shooting one - No wad is used.
