My brother bought us something fun to play with.

i hammered this out some days ago and finished up the profile enough to cut it off the end of the bar and then started to file on it for some clean lines. I need to get a belt sander in order to finish it. Nothing fancy, I just want a simple skinner that is sharp. I'll grind out a tang and fix a deer antler handle to it. Not sure on blade length just yet. I will have to take my sheath out there and make adjustments so she fits nice and snug then work from there.

I don't know what the steel is but its throwing showers or bright white/yellow sparks which tells me its good hard steel.

Once shes all shaped I'll trace out a template then transfer that to plastic so I can always keep the shape to replicate it easier.

Good start for your first knife, many different shapes are in your head I would think. Knowing you it will be fur trade era.

Good starter blade FG. Before I started watching TV's Forged in Fire I never realized what efforts go into making a great knife. You'll get a lot of satisfaction in crafting your own personal traditional style knives. Keep us posted on your progress.

Another needed item.

Still have to polish the blade out then temper it. But this is the design i went with for my first knife. All my other knifes have thick handles which makes skinning the thin hair critters like foxes, difficult as I can not get a delicate hold on the knife. I made this handle nice and thin, the blade is around 5 1/2" ( i have to measure it to be 100% sure) but i am extremely happy with the turn out of my first knife.

Once we temper the blade I will finish up the curly maple handles, epoxy them and then apply the genuine oil finish.
