I took the Gheenoe to go scouting for turkeys this morning. A place where I did good in the past had been underwater for the last 7 months so I checked to see it's status.
I got there via a slough into a cypress head but on the way in I surprised a big gator that was between 10 & 11 ft. long.
He was on his favorite sunning area before sliding off into the water.
On the way up the slough a cottonmouth about 3 ft. long dropped off an overhanging limb into the water.
We got to the 'landing' where Nyssa jumped out and showed me the way. It's only about 2/10ths of a mile to reach the higher ground but it's not real easy to get there.
We finally got to a hammock where the turkeys, hogs, and deer hang out but the black gumbo made it hard going getting there. It almost sucked my hip boots off a couple of times.
On the way out I saw a 3 1/2 ft. gator on a log so we paid him a visit.

The bird you heard "screaming" is a limpkin. Birders come from all over to see them. There are lots of them here along with wood storks, ibis, and about 50 other water birds.
