I saw a post on another board about reshaping the nose of 300gr 458 into a shape more similar to the Barnes Original Semi Spitzer. That led me to start looking for cheaper 300gr 458 bullets to re shape. Ive found a place that will do it for $30/250 or less. Many 458s for 45/70s work great at ML speeds so i was curious about jacket thickness.

I came up with this jacket comparison and a interesting statement about the Speer 458 300gr bullet.

.458 300 grain bullets

Speer Unicore HP .030
I could not separate the jacket from the Speer. I measured the jacket thickness as best I could at the edge.

Sierra Pro-Hunter FNHP base: .020 tip: .018 ( Ive shot these but with heavy charges at close range, expansion is pretty intense in my media tests)

Barnes Original O FN .045..this is actually .032 now and thicker at the base. Still really tough for typical ML speeds unless you want a ton of penetration and less expansion.

Hornady HP base: .020 tip: .015

Reminghton HP base .020 tip: .015

Nosler Partition
top section base: .079 tip: .037
bottom section: .065
partition: .121

It might be kinda cool if i can make some "semi spitzers" with a smaller HP from some of the cheap Remington 458s or the Sierras. The Rems are only $33/100 and offer the thinnest jacket. Grab a few BC points and try to slow down the expansion just a tad. :D
