Ladle casting is all I've ever done and it works well for me. I agree that timing is everything.
 
One of the best descoveries I've made for melting my lead bars, reclaimed lead ect., is a old 20 lb propane tank cut in half. The bottom half fits perfectly on a turkey fryer stove. We all have an old one laying around it seems. On the valve is a set screw , to totally empty the tank. When done unscrew the valve,fill with water to displace any left over gas,drain. Then sawzall around the middle. I welded 2 handles on mine.
