Mentioned elsewhere, the MMP supplied figure as a generalization for totally reliable (accurate) performance is 35,000 PSI peak pressure.

There is a related trend. The sabot is a gasket, an the thinner the gasket material-- the less opportunity for unwanted migration / deformation. The .458 MMP appears to be the strongest sabot you can buy-- testing apparently confirms this.

Also related is a practical velocity limit, likewise a generalization-- that being 2500 fps.

So people claiming that 45 cal bullets were more accurate than 44 cal may not have been as goofy as some people claimed they were!

Has the "tighter is better" theory been proved or disproved?

That's contingent on charge and specific sabot. Some of my best groups have been with .40 caliber MMP blue sabots-- the thickest of the bunch. Knight won the NMLRA World Championships with .40 / 50 sabots.

But, in industrial gasket terminology, gasket creep can be lessened by using a thinner gasket. Thinner the better, in the case of highest pressure.
