I received this in an email and thought it was interesting.

Penetrating Oils

Machinist's Workshop magazine recently published some information on
various penetrating oils that I found very interesting. Some of you
might appreciate this. The magazine reports they tested penetrates for
break out torque on rusted nuts.
They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional
machinist. They arranged a subjective test of all the popular
penetrates with the control being the torque required to remove the
nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.

*Penetrating oils ........... Average torque load to loosen in foot-pounds

No Oil used ................... 516 ft-lbs
WD-40 ....................... ... 238 ft-lbs
PB Blaster ..................... 214 ft-lbs
Liquid Wrench ................127 ft-lbs
Kano Kroil ..................... 106 ft-lbs
ATF*-Acetone mix.............53 ft-lbs

The ATF-Acetone mix is a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic
transmission fluid and acetone. Note this "home brew" released bolts
better than any commercial product in this one particular test.

Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with
equally good results.
Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is almost as good as "Kroil" for about
20% of the price.

Steve from Godwin-Singer says that ATF-Acetone mix is best, but you
can also use ATF and lacquer thinner in a 50-50 mix. *ATF=Automatic
Transmission Fluid

When I was an auto mechanic decades ago I used an oil in a spray can that said Penetrating Oil. Not sure it's still being made? It worked pretty good.

I have always used Liquid Wrench because it worked. I tried PB blaster and didn't get good results. I'll try ATF and acetone now.

Thanks for the info, Joe.

We use pb blaster religiously. Especially when we're breaking bolts/nuts loose on u joints or even popping the u points out of the axle/driveline knuckle.

For many years i worked part time as a mechanic while serving in the US Army.  Did a lot of work on heavy trucks.   i mixed used GM Dextron automatic transmission fluid 50-50 with acetone.   The old Dextron with whale oil worked better than the newer stuff.

i remember leaving a flathead Ford v-eight in a drum half full of used transmission fluid for about six months.  All the nuts and bolts came off easliy.

I couldn't help snickering when I read this. Immediately, the lyrics to "Take It Easy" by The Eagles popped into my head. "It's a girl my Lord in a flat-bed Ford".

I always mis-heard those lyrics as "A Girl My Lord in a Flathead Ford"

when my dad and I rebuilt my first cars motor ( '53 ford 239 v8) removing the head bolts were sprayed down for 3 days with penetrating oil because we were afraid they'd snap lol.
