Thank you guys for all the imput. I will start gathering supplies tomorrow. What else I need to understand is the size of the ball i would shoot in the .54, as they have a few to pick from?

A .530 ball is the most standard size for the 54.
Track of the Wolf Muzzleloaders has a very good selection of different sizes for 54 caliber.

Would these bullets be good for deer or just target.?
I have in my 50 cal CVA pocket rocket used a 45 cal maxi (pure lead)with a Harvester lite blue sabot , and @ 200 yds me and the neighbor kept the shots 9 :00/ 3 inch apart ,he could not believe that short barrel shot like that and needless to say @ 100 yds it was boring !!! Darrin watched along with RFD (he shoots with us) and the rest of the guys . If you could put these components together for your 54 you might have fun with it , thou my CVA V2 pistol is a 1-28 twist my Renegade 50 shoots the same load well with a 1-48 twist /70-75 grains weighted of BH209 or 85 gr OE 2F And yup kills what ever you point it at /pretty sure I have 50 cal maxi for a 54 if you can find sabots too/Ed

I’d pick up a hundred .530” and some patches .020” and .015” to begin. Eekjellander below has some good information but for someone starting out I would recommend keeping it simple. Powder, patched ball and work on your fundamentals of shooting with iron sights. That gun is capable of 2 MOA with some, combination of ball, patch and powder. I’d bet good money on it…

Thanks guys, all great info..took a quick inventory. Had about 300 #11 caps, about 300 .530 round balls, .018 patches[pillow ticking). 2 lbs. Goex fff, which i would like to save for the pistols. I also found about 3 1/2 pounds of old powder. It is 20 + years old. Do not know if it is any good. Been in my heated garage since i bought it, do not know when. The goex and rs are both unopened . Check out picks. Ty .

Ty Deermanok, figured i would try it. If it doesn't work i will ditch it. Going to stock up on some 3f black powder. My manual says i can use it in both my pistols and rifle. Just like you said, ty...to a great guy..

When i bought the gun i updated the sights. I put a lyman 57sml on the rear and an #17 for the front. My Lyman gun manual states ball size to be .535". I have .530", can i make up the difference with a thicker patch?

Thank you all for the exceptional information. Had a good day shooting, very cold and windy out. I checked gun all over because i have not shot it in about 20 yrs. Everything looked good so i loader her up. First 2 shots were 60 grs.by volume pyrodex rs, .530 ball, .018 pillow ticking. Did not know what to expect so i shot at my burning barrel, 60 yds. Hit it though, quite low. Picked up quick adjust, same load shot at barrel again, damn if i did not hit about were i was aiming. Went and set up target at fifty yds., shot a five shot group, with just more powder, 80 grains by volume. Surprised myself quite pleasantly. I am going to fall in love with this thing all over again. I shot a 2 1\2" group. I know it can even get better with some fine tuning and better products. I was just shooting my old, old stock. Thanks again to all, for your help and motivation...... ..shorty

Well, there you have it. Nice shooting. And now some much needed air can get to the bottom of the burn in that barrel.

That's the way to vent that old barrel.
I would love to do the same here at my house but the Mrs. would have a fit, Lol.
You look like you're ready for deer season already.
