I am going to try to shoot some of my 420 grain No Excuses bullets soon just to see how they seem to do.

I hope to stsrt at about 70 grains and go up from there.

Is a wad a good idea or should I be okay with hopefully lightish charges?

A lot of shooters do use an over powder wad of some sort.
They provide a good gas seal in the barrel.
I guess it's recommended to use a slightly larger wad for the best seal. 54 caliber in a 50, for example

If you are shooting a 50-cal ML, I recommend getting 54-cal Felt Wads. You want to get the next size felt wads for your ML. The seal is better and MIGHT help eliminate some of the fowling in your bore??? I shoot 50-cal felt wads in my 45-cal ML. You will have no issues in seating the wad down on your powder charge.
