I use Permatex medium strength threadlocker blue.
Recently I had to re-set a scope b/c the Weaver rings were not holding it when I shot 300 grainers. I soaked the parts in Hoppe's, picked at the residue with lots of pointy things and rinsed everything with alcohol (the rubbing kind). Still there was residue.

I reassembled everything using the threadlocker, and shot 250 grainers tonight. It seems to be holding it.

In the meantime, I bought another set of Maxima rings and expect to change it out when the opportunity comes. When I do that, I am going to reverse the bases. Those screws will have the same threadlocker on them. I will feel better if all that gunk is off the threads. Is there something that will clean it, or should I get new screws?

Just reapply.

New screws if you wish, but not necessary.
