What powders are ya'll using for your 22-250s? I have always used IMR/AA-4064 or Imr-4895. I've TRIED H-380...never have done any good with it. I'm thinking VV N-140 or H-414.. Mostly using 50-55gr bullets...

powders for 22/250

Chuck,

I have had excellent results with the H380 powder in the 22/250 as well as the 270. The slower burn rate of the H-380 is best suited for the 55 grain bullet. I have used H-380 with the Barnes 53 grain triple shock as well giving me 1/2 inch groups. For a 1/14 inch twist I was pleased.

For 50 grains and lighter Varget is top dog but Varget can vary from lot to
lot in velocity. I buy at least 3 pounds of it at a time.

I have not tried the VITIVOURI powders and like the 2 pound containers. . Hodgdon powders get it done for me.

Imr 4064 is a substitute for Varget, they both have similar burn rates.

I'm using H380 under a 40 grain V-max and getting around 4000 FPS. Sub MOA groups. My 700 BDL loves it.

I believe 380 got its name from a pet load that used 38.0 grains of the mil-surp powder. I love H414/WW760 for the Swift. However, Varget has done quite well in the 22/250 with a variety of bullets. Varget is where I start with 22/250 loads.

I've never tried Varget as I have stuff all the way around it...IMR-4895, IMR-4064, AA-4064, AA-2520, H-380, and W-760 so I've really never felt the need for it although everyone I know that has it, loves it. H-380 and I just don't get along so I am really looking for something to use in place of it. I get great groups with the 4895/4064s with 40gr and 50gr bullets but I want something to shoot 55gr bullets mainly. I also want something with a higher load density than then 4064s. So that takes me to VV N-150(instead of N-140), Ramshot Big Game, and H-414.

Guess what....
I ordered some CCI 200 primers, some AA-1680(for the Hornet), some Ramshot Big Game, and some VV N-150! What a sucker I am to try something new...and I couldn't make up my mind which one! ..Oh yeah...also some 55gr Sierra SBT GameKings and some 55gr Sierra SPT Varminters...

Pretty cool, huh? 8)

Use to load for the 22-250 and had good success with RamShot's BigGame with 50gr Sierra BlitzKings and their 55gr HpGameKings. I know others that have good things to say about N-140 and Varget also.

big6x6,
you might try IMR3031 (33grs) & IMR4320 (34grs). In my 22-250 Remington 40XB they both shoot under 1/2" using Sierra 52gr HPBT and also the 55gr Spitzers. I have found that most 22-250s will shoot one or the other well.

IMR-4895 since 1975. I used to use 52-53 gr HP's.

Now I use 40 gr Ballistic Tips. Every chuck I've hit with them drops on the spot.
