My friend got a 22 for my son. It is a Remington No. 6 falling block. My 4 year old is way too small for it, so we're making a custom stock out of a piece of solid oak for him that will fit him now and have a block I can add on to grow with him. Keeps the original stock untouched.

Nice, my 3 kids all learned on a Stevens Marksman break open .22. I commend you for avoiding the urge to chop the original stock like so many Bubba's out there. Good shooting to you and your boy!

For those who've done it, what's the best DIY product to finish?

Drilled it out properly and sanded to final fit last night. Ready for a butt plate and finish now.

I like an oil finish, especially on a gun that is going to be used. If you gouge it, you can sometimes steam the wood back into shape and just re-oil. Much better than the glossy polyurethane finish I had on my Remington back in the 70's. You are skilled to make a stock like that.

So, My daughter is stripping her Savage 64 and rebuilding it. She wanted to know more about how a gun works and this is a pretty easy project for a few dollars. It`s one of the late 60`s Winchester models with a Birch stock. The original finish has peeled in places leaving the wood looking pretty rough with a strange pink hue. I've refinished a few stocks but never a birch stock. What stain is going to work best here ? What have you used in the past. Anyone got pictures to share? Thanks for you help !!

if the stock has an open grain, which oak and walnut do, use Herters French Red and follow the directions. You should fill the grain first then finish. It is great stuff. I follow it with Permalynn from Laurel Mountain Forge. It is the best that I have used.

Ended up wet-sanding with tru-oil with 400 grit to fill the grain. Seemed to work okay. It's not perfect, but it'll work for a 4 year old who's going to grow out of it in a couple years. I'll be shopping for a shotgun before I know it.
