Hey all,

I’m happy to have found this community of you black powder nuts. I’m 36 and have hunted with percussion caps and inlines since I was an early teen. To be honest though, my dad always nerded out on all things black powder and I never paid close enough attention. As life tends to do, a curveball came, and I lost my dad about 5 years ago. So now I’m trying to teach myself what I should have asked him more about while he was around.

In addition to some rifles and pistols, I acquired dad’s Knight .50 cal in-line that he converted over to a 209 gun, as well as an older T/C Hawken .50 cal that belonged his dad, my grandpa. That gun is why I’m here. I just got it out of the leather scabbard and it needs gone over and probably redone (or some parts, at least). I’ll try to find the forum I need to be in to post about it and get some pics up. I’d appreciate any insight and pointers from you all.

Anyone in West Virginia?

Thanks All!

Quarter West Virginian here! Lol Gpa was born, raised, and retired in Braxton Co which is where I learned to hunt and still do today, but live in Ohio. Welcome!!

I'm originally from Elkins, WV but moved to Winchester, VA for work. Im headed back there next week for the heritage season... will be hunting with my TC hawken also. I picked up a .45 TC hawken at a local gun store a few years ago and then ended up on this website for help with it. Its a wealth of knowledge. If you have a specific question, I'd start in the search bar to see if it has been discussed previously before asking it. Most topics as you will find have been previously discussed at length and you'll actually get to the answers faster that way then asking and waiting for responses. Also a former member "Idaholewis" posted a ton of info about the TC hawken/renegades (theyre essentially the same rifles but the differences are mostly cosmetic). Assuming you have a 1:48 twist barrel, which most are, I found for commercial offerings hornady XTPs with sabots shot best out of my guns. That slower twist rate tends to need a shorter bullet. Idaholewis mostly dealt with hand poured full diameter conical bullets and had good success with them. You can also shoot patched roundballs with good accuracy if thats the way youre wanting to focus. Welcome to the forum and hope you find the answers to all your questions. Don't be afraid to post your results either. Everyone likes some good target porn

Welcome from another "newbie', in Kansas. Yes, the best Virginia is West Virginia!
I too have hunted some with BP and taken a couple of deer and a nice fat black & white spotted boar (great German brats) with my TC Gray Hawk. I've been out of it for a long time and am just now having a renewed interest over cartridge firearms. I am finding this forum and "The Muzzleloading Forum" ( The Muzzleloading Forum ) to be of great help and interest. Have fun, you have plenty of time, I am almost 75 years old. o_O
