Got out for the second time with my new savage and try'd VN120 with 300 sst.Loaded up 55g recoil not bad .Worked up to 60g started grouping good 1-1 1/2 in at 100y speeds 2370-2390 not bad for 300g bullet .Ran out of sst soo I loaded up some shok waves same weight damn they where hard to push down the barrel.Speed now up to 2390-2410 not grouping as good 1 1/2 - 2" and 4" hight at 100y (all with factory sabots). Next came the Barnes much easyer to load then the other two, speed lower 2300-2330 groups not bad but not as goog as the sst.Decide to give these a try at 200y shok wave is bulls eye! sst the same ! the barnes 8" low :? could that be because of the hl point. To bad it would of bean my choice for my up comeing moose hunt! What would be a good bullet for moose out to 200y?

It is on a moose; it is a FAR tougher bullet.

I was thinking less drop as well.

Okay, then don't. Wanted to use that smiley for a while, and Rifleman hasn't been flashing his buttocks lately. :?

If you look at the kill zone on a moose, you'll see that a 300 gr. MZ Expander is good for more than 200 yards.

As is, with the std. BC @ 2300 fps, +.299 in. @ 100 yards and -2.02 in. @ 200 yards is what you have.

At 200 yards, you have 1719 fpe of energy with an expanding bullet with no possible core separation, and 100% weight retention. If he is inside 230 yards, just pull the trigger.

That will take care of your moose-- I've killed them with a LOT less.

Sure, a high BC bullet is nice when all else is equal, but it never is. That is the very last consideration on my list when looking for a suitable bullet.

Randy, maybe you should re-read the whole post. He was unhappy about the 8 inches of drop. If the .458 Barnes shoots flatter, it might be a better choice for the shooter. The flatter/ more accurate bullet would get the call for me at 200 plus yds. Everybody has different opinions. SHEESH

Mr. Grouse, shame on you. Eight inches of drop WHERE? You can't just pop a group @ 200 yards and because it is 8" low call it 8" drop. Certainly you know you have to shoot it @ 100 yards as well.

Drop from what to what? This is moose, not muskrat.

The 300 x bullet with a stated bc of .34 is my bullet, if the test I intend to commence when they arrive work out. Of course that is a big if.

What about the .458 dia 300 or 350 gr. Barnes X bullet?

Scott, I'm with you-- I have not been able to get the 300 gr. X bullet to group as well as the MZ. Ron Name has out of his SMI rifles HAS, though. If it grouped for me, I'd sure take it @ 2300 fps.

The 350's do group (for me), both the 350 gr. MZ and the 350 X. To get them to have a clear trajectory advantage, though-- it puts more pounding on my pitiful little shoulder than I care to endure.

For tough guys like you, the 350 X may be the best bullet made. For guys like me, happy with wimpy 2300 fps 300 gr. bullets-- well, not yet.

Grouse, did you win Rifleman's shorts yet? Nervous?

A better BC is a better BC, period-- muzzle, 100 yards, 500 yards. Dumb old bullet has no odometer.

Tom,
Better get on the horn to the Army and get some chemical warfare specialists to your house. You might need the biological warfare guys too. You just never know what's been in Rifleman's shorts.
